Yellowman Peter Tosh King Tubby Bob Marley (duh)
I'm not all that knowledgeable on the subject. I enjoy dub and some reggae. Most of what I hear is remixed or sampled by people like Thievery Corporation, Tosca, etc.
Take a look at most any Reggae Sunsplash festival lineup.

King Tubby's always a ringer.
If you're looking for that deep, Rasta sound, I recommend The Congos' classic album HEART OF THE CONGOS, produced be Lee Perry, recently (as in in the last decade) re-released by blood and fire. This one is a ringer.
If you like DJ toasting and want to get to its roots, I recommend U-Roy and I-Roy. The best single album by either of those two is DON'T CHECK ME WITH NO LIGHTWEIGHT STUFF by I-Roy, also out on Blood and Fire.
One other re-release label of note is Soul Jazz Records aka Universal Sound. Their Dynamite series is exquisite (if expensive).
If you are in the market for some new Marley, grab TALKIN' BLUES which is so raw and so good it'll convert all but the most soulless doubters
When taking chances on new reggae discs, I usually look for the dates. '76, '77, '78 are all incredible years.
P.S. One of the sickest, sickest single tracks EVER Is Donna and Althea's "uptown Top Rankin'"
Gimme Likkle Bass, Lemme Wine Up me Waist!

Go get Peter Tosh's "Legalize" album....
One of the seminal works in Jamaican music...And pretty fucking raw, if I do say so myself...
