i think this is the most impressive open software i've come across since making the switch to linux. i know a lot of people here have probably already heard of it and may use it, but for those who haven't, i just want to let you know that here is an impressively complete, quality full office suite. it's free and open source and there is a windows version. i really am surprised at how complete it is, at how well It Just Works?. i cannot speak highly enough of it. try it. it you'll like it.

I used OpenOffice for years, then on a whim one day, I tried Abiword. I must say, for word processing, Abiword is far superior. Much more polished feel and better performance on my machine. I still keep OpenOffice around for other tasks though, and in fact I've installed it on my mom's laptop instead of MS Office.

I run a middle school computer lab. When I migrated the students from Word to Abiword my headaches really decreased. Fuck the office assistant.

While we're on the topic of debian, do you know of any debian-based distros that support the flash plugin and nVidia drivers? K/Ubuntu didn't seem to like the combination.

I have been using Oo.o for a few years now - it's great. Never tried Abiword, though.
there are some tips for having OO.o load quicker. I posted these in another thread - it works, at least, in ubuntu linux.

Drink, it's been a while since I used Debian, but can't you give yourself access to the non-free repository by editing sources.list or somesuch?

I've run into this problem as well - since installing the nVidia video drivers, my computer's really had problems w/ flash.
Honestly, I have a variety of stability issues w/ firefox right now - it crashes quite regularly. It doesn't affect the overall performance of my computer, but it's a bit annoying.
I haven't had any issues w/ OO, though -- I could use a little help w/ Calc right now. I'm trying to chart multiple xy series on one graph. When I select many collumns, it takes the first one as the x-value and each other as a series of y-values, but I want it to take the first as x, second as corresponding y, third as a new x-series, fourth as it's corresponding y, etc... Any idea how to do this?

what happens exactly? I can ask around.
which flash plugin are you using?
I am running firefox 1.5 rc1 + flashplayer-mozilla (and fglrx ATI drivers - which was real easy to install & works just fine, btw). no problems whatsoever.

Well, it was my first venture into the world of *nix, but I tried Kubuntu and Ubuntu (seperate installations, I realize they're the same base). Firefox 1.5 wasn't out at the time. With the latest Flash plugin (7 I believe, 8 wasn't availible yet if it is now) and nVidia sound drivers, flash movies would quickly fall behind in sound and either become completely out of sync, or stutter to the point that watching anything or playing any flash-based game was impossible. I'm pretty convinced it was a sound issue. What tipped me off was the Table Tennis game at www.Teagames.com. When playing with the sound option disabled, the game ran flawlessly, even faster than in XP. With the sound on, the game ran well enough, but kind of froze or hiccuped after each time the ball bounced (when a sound would be made). I'd encourage you to try it out to see what I mean.
Apparently the stuttering problem is not unique to my box- both the K and Ubuntu forums were full of posts about the problem, but the answers and solutions were only speculative.

I honestly don't recall the exact version number. It was the Flash plugin that I got and installed through Synaptic (or Adept in K/u). The only one that came up, retreived with the apt -get method. I think? I know it was a Flash 7 plugin. Not sure if the Flash 8 plugin for *nix is out yet, I haven't been keeping track since I got rid of my install. Although the problem wasn't limited to Firefox- Konquerer had the same problem (Kubuntu).

i have no problem with flash installed (flashplayer-mozilla 7.0.25-0.0, flashplugin-nonfree 7.0.25-5, and mozilla-firefox 1.4.99+1.5rc1.dfsg-1) on debian... is it a problem with your video card or the flash plugin?
