Hi everyone, this is my first post to shroomery and I am SO EXCITED because I found some very pretty mushrooms. I think I know what they are but I'd like to be 1000% sure since they are my first find. I found these in the woods near the coast in Olympic National Park, mid-November. I'm thinking Psilocybe Cyanescens.
The shafts were off-white with definite bluing, especially on the pins, which had very very blue-purple shafts. Most of the full-grown ones I found were about 3" across and 3" tall, some slightly larger. The stem thickness varied a lot from mushroom to mushroom - the absolute fattest one was about an inch in diameter.
The caps were a little different color than I had expected, darker brown and often with a very dark brown center. The edges of the older-looking caps were wavy and upturned, but 9/10 of them were downturned and not wavy.
These mushrooms were coated with a clear slimy dew, a lot more slimy than your average mushroom. You can see it dripping off one of the caps in the pictures. Very shiny and beautiful.
They don't have a very distinct odor, just sort of a damp smell.
The gills are a deep tan color. The gills were attached to the pins and then separated on the more mature mushrooms.
I haven't got a spore print yet - I have to dry them first, right? I'll try to get one in a few days if it's needed.
I hope this is enough info, I did my best to follow the guidelines. Second, third, fourth and fifth opinions are welcome! Shroomery.org is so awesome, I have gotten tons of good info. Thanks!!!

Hey man,
I'll first tell you that they are positively not Psilocybe cyanescens.
I am unsure of the exact ID because of the lack of sporeprint. You will need to do a sporeprint when the caps are still wet.
A wild guess would point towards Hygrocybe psittacina which is not active and edible with caution.
The spore print should be white, so you'll need to print your mushroom on a peice of tin foil or black peice of paper.
Lastly, you are looking in the wrong area for Cyanescens. They will be growing in woodchips and mulch surrounding corporate buildings and rose gardens, and not in the forest (dead stumps, trees, etc).

Thanks for the reply, I do appreciate it.
I was doing some backcountry camping and not expecting to find anything when I discovered these blue-stemmed mushrooms and got all twitterpaited. Ah well.
The pictures of the Hygrocybe Psittacina that I could locate looked really different from these. Any other ideas? I'd still like to know what they are.
I am trying to get some spore prints (first attempt at this) so hopefully I will have a picture of them soon. Is there a compendium of spore prints out there that you reference, or how does that work?
Meanwhile, look at this Sea Lion cub we saw on the rocks next to our campsite. ISN'T HE CUTE!!! AWWWWWW.
Thanks again

hehe, I was just surfing with one this morning.
That one looks a lot whiter than the ones down here but they are maybe different
Im sure that your finds are Hygrocybe. As for the species of Hygrocybe, that was my guess in species due to the blue/green apperance.

Someone will probably chime in here at give you another ID...
But, another thing to realize is that Hygrocybe psittacina start off very green, and then fade during maturity, so that is maybe why you think they "look" so different.
Try googling it and looking for a description and see if that matches.

Hmmmm, I found at least a hundred of these mushrooms ranging from little pins just poking out of the ground to decaying with age, and there wasn't a spot of green on 'em. They seemed pretty common, because we found them all along the path for miles as we walked toward shore and we weren't even looking.
Most of the stems are actually off-white more than blue, but I posted some of the bluer ones because I thought that would be a tip-off of something. You get a general idea from the photos though. The goo covering seemed unusual too. These things were thick with a clear goo on the outside that had no odor. We saw dozens of kinds of mushrooms on the hike and these are definitely of the extra-slimy variety.
Surely someone from the NW has noticed these bluish-stemmed mushrooms before? It tends to get a newbie excited. I can't be the first. Anyone ever seen them?

Maybe Im completely wrong about these mushrooms, I dont know....
Species is probably off then, but, it still resembles Hygrocybe because of the slimy or "waxy" cap.
Did you get a sporeprint?
