hey, i was wondering wat the differenced between sativa dominant strains and indica dominant strains are, other than the trippiness vs lathargec explination. a chemical explination and a more detailed feeling explination would be awsome. also, are there pure sativa and pure indica strains, or only dominant of the two? thanks

Sativa grow bigger and have larger thinner leaves. Indica is short and makes fat colas. Sativa is a head high while Indica is a body high. Sativa gives you the munchies and Indica will knock you out.

As far as I know indica and sativa aren't especially well defined in terms of genetics (but I could easily be wrong)
I know my preference is sativa.
Many websites that sell marijuana seeds claim that there are species that are both pure indica and pure sativa.
Sativa is described as a more lively, stimulating high whereas indica is a stoned, knocked out type high.
Personally, from the 'personalities' of these different strains I would hypothesize that sativa contained forms of THC which had shorter hydrocarbon 'tails' than the indica counterparts. (knowing that longer chain hydrocarbons are said to put a heavier load on your mind/body)

smoking indica you really feel the high a lot more, smoking sativa it's more like "I feel normal, but at the same time completely f**ked"
My first time with sativa was a pretty fun experience, we almost ended up throwing a gram of it in a river without realizing what we were doing (failed roll attempt, friend thought he was just tossing the paper, ended up tossing the entire (open) joint, it landed on a plant hanging about 8 inches above the water... Retrieving it really felt like one of those pinpoint accuracy Mission Impossible moments...

I wish I could help you more, but all I remember is that THC and CBD both play a role in the type of high you get from a plant, one plant contains more CBD than the other or something. And there are Pure sativa and pure indica plants, but the only way to know for sure is if you have a lab to study the plants tissues.

i prefer to smoke sativa in the morning and daytime. that "up" high is really useful for doing your day to day things will stoned out of your mind. its a very clear high. then after dinner, some indica is the perfect thing. just relaxing in the evening getting your "heavy stone" on. it'll put you right to sleep.

Sativa has a higher THCV content, which is associated to the more psychdelic state, while Sativa has a higher cannabinol content which is associated to the lethargic state. While strains play a big role, so does when the flowers are harvest, as generally later will yeild more cannibonids and more crystals, so street cannabis tends to be more indica in quality.

first off let me introduce you to www.overgrow.com they have a lovely strain guide over there that lists what genus the strains are.
Its been said but indica has the higher CBD content which produces a more pronounced body feel (IE the couch lock), and sativa has i think zero or an extremely small amount of CBD with higher levels of the THC chemical.
Most strains you smoke will either be an indica or a sativa indica hybrid. Sativa's are notoriously hard to grow and tend to have a lot smaller yields then indicas. They also require warmer climates and i believe more light then the indica's do.
Personally i love a good sativa but i think the best is an 80/20 sativa/indica cross. Enough to give you a nice heady high with a wonderful body buzz. Although ive been mainly getting my hands on pure indicas i dont like smoking them too much as they tend to make me way to apathetic as well as leave me with a nice hangover the next morning.

is it true that you can discern sativa vs indica by the smell?
the buds i've been smoking smell almost "sweet" and not too weedy, and they seem to give a mainly sativa high as far as it's kind of trippy but it doesn't make you very lazy or anything.
the first smoke i had of them i was like "man this is weird how clear it feels...."

ok, sorry i meant to say
"Sativa has a higher THCV content, which is associated to the more psychdelic state, while Indica has a higher cannabinol content which is associated to the lethargic state"
listen to coda though, go to overgrow, they got all the specifics on it. THeres alot of botany knowledge there.
for the most part you can disern them by smell. indica's tend to smell more "spicy", though this takes some training to accurately do.

I had a sativa dominant strain from the medical marijuana shop called "power." It gave a great, trippy, bright high, but an irritable as hell crash. It would ruin the rest of the day. Whereas the typical indica strains don't get me nearly as tripped out, and give less of a crash as well.

I love both species, but it's true that Indica is body high, Sativa is a head high, but don't forget about hybrids those are even better.

Like previously mentioned sativas are very lanky plants that produce rather small yields in comparison to a good indica. Not many people I know grow sativas because of there g/sq. meter ratio. They stretch tremendously and can get 6 feet or higher. Typically the flowering time is longer than that of an indica as well. The supposid "pure" sativa's that I have smoked have a very up high, almost like a little shot of caffeine.
Most bud is hybridized these days though (and for good reasons), so the chances of having a pure strain are pretty unlikely.
