cactus love
    #4942156 - 11/16/05 03:43 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I live in an area that is natively friendly to cactus.

since gaining an insatiable interest in mescalito, I've
begun noticing lots of nice, healthy local stands of
pedro in people's yards.

I've found at least 8 different locations in my area
where there are multiple columns, some reaching 15
feet tall.

but, I've been wrestling with the notion of hacking
a cutting or two from people's cactus...this is something
that I am not comfortable with.

today I decided to knock on the door of one of the
houses who has a yard FULL of columnal cacti, with
3 different stands of pedro over 15' with 20+ stalks
each stand.

serious shit...

anywho, knocked on the door, long story short, I asked
him if I could have some cuttings or the withering fruit
for seeds....it was an elderly guy and he said "take a
dozen if you want! I have too much".

I didn't have a cutting tool, so I just picked the
fallen bits...this was just the shit that had been
knocked or broken and was on the ground....

I got something like 40 feet of cactus...some SUPER
healthy and green...8 ribs, some thirsty, some horizontally
rooted...all incredible!

and that was just the shit that was lying around...I
haven't even begun to prune it...I spotted a number
of prime branches that needed to be removed for the
good of the entire stand...I'm going back in the
spring to see if I can offer to help clean his yard
and prune his cacti.

anywho....cactus love is in the air!

Sounds great man. Good job on asking permission. That is the only way to go when it comes to getting cacti cuttings. And sounds like it worked out well for ya too! You should try to get some pics.

Were they all pachanoi, or some others too?

You did the right thing, man. Just think if you would have tried to hack some without asking and got caught-you probably wouldn't have any at all, and have a new enemy. But instead you have an ass load of san pedro

One of the scummiest things I've read on this board was some kid who was bragging about the fact that he and his friends would skate all through town on a friday night, going down certain streets and hacking down *every* san pedro they found with a saw. They'd gather around and boil the insane amount of cactus and trip balls all night with all their friends. This guy was so happy and thrilled with the idea.

I'd rather not search for the post, reading the real thing might get me kind of depressed. Needless to say, I'd love to see someone shove a whole peruvianus down his throat. I'm sure he'd trips balls. He'd just need to get used to the mesh he once called an esophagus.

If you ever want to trade some cacti for some nice tazzies (poppy seeds) or some datura, be sure to hit me up!
Enjoy your new cacti!!!!
Growing things like cacti or my new kratom are just are rewarding (maybe more!) as the final outcome for me!  Enjoy!!!

The pantsboy picture never gets old... though I don't know the true source. It's somewhat of a legend with no explaination.

Or I could UTFSE.

Depending on the person who asked me, even if I did give him a cutting, theres a possibility I'd take each and every cactus inside that night. This mainly applies to a younger, or shadey looking individual. Too many robbery stories.

the wors thing with taking stuff from peoples yards is the impression it leaves.
ull have people in the streets talking about how crasy junkies will do anything to get high etc...

also i have found that people are often kewl like that if u just ask em about it.
the fact that u share an interest goes a long way to bridge gaps of culture and age etc...

well, I went back this morning...the first batch
was just the freely collectible bits...I still had
permission to return this weekend with a knife...

so I did.

this time, I took care to be intelligent about the
pruning, pulling off only the arms that were leaning
heavily on others or about to break off outright.

I also removed some conflicting stalks that were too
closely growing and, lastly, took some tip cuttings
in strategic spots to encourage multiple branches.

if you looked at the 3 stands, you wouldn't be able
to recognize that anything had been taken without
close inspection.

I also found that he seems to have an abundance of
what appears to be spachianus.

I took three groundfall specimens...MUCH more thorns
in those...will try to post a picture in hopes of ID.

images.google.com and the other common spots have
neither clear pictures, helpful descriptions or any
consistency....so I may need some help.

cheers!

yeah...this is all they have:

not the best picture...not morphologically as similar to the
spachianus listed on google as I would expect...I'm trying to
find info on spine color, pattern, and such.

I'm about 80% sure that's what it is...I'll do my best to get
my camera resurrected tommorrow so I can show you all what
I'm talking about here.

the longest length is a big 5-6' S curved piece...fat dog.

hey afoaf go to the nook. Look into the cacti section, look for a few people such as MS Smith and a couple others....
Also check out "trouts notes" do a search on that.

MS Smith is a cool dude. Ask him about spination of species ask him what ever you have to ask.......

yeah...did it.

it's def spachianus:

I've got 3 nice tips and about 10 feet worth 10 or more stumps.

a lot of the posts at the nook said that it grows as fast if not
faster than pachanoi and that it's a good grafting stock.

unfortunately, this stuff is SUPER spiney...have to have gloves
to handle it...by far.

probably just good for 'collectibility'...I wouldn't want to have
to try to despine that mofo!

spachianus is a fast grower and very common in the western US. I've heard that it's good for grafting and I wouldn't have any reason to doubt that claim. The trick for handling spachianus is to position your hands flat against the plant so that all the spines are poking you equally. The force against your hands is then evenly distributed and there is no pain.

Hehe... you don't need to be a crazy indian to do it. It's simple physics.

Spachs aren't too potent, though they've tested positive.

I'm pretty sure they're not in Trout's notes. (A fantastic book... just got it yesterday.) He has a section on nearly all active triches. Not spachianus though, perhaps that says something for its potency. Not even in the index.

Well golly. Every time I see a yard with a columnar cactus growing in it it doesnt look much like a T. pachanoi except from a distance. I'm sure I could ask for a cutting, but I'd hate to waste my time (and their cactus!) just to cut off a peice for identification.

You should be set for a long time, however. Getting as much cactus as you have and propagating it, you could set up a sort of never-ending mescaline gobstopper.
