Off of the top of my head...
Mushrooms demystified, Psilocybin mushrooms of the world, National Audubon's guide, Simon and shuster's guide.... There are lots of internet sites also..
Many good books have also been published that deal with a certain genus only. I have a few of those... they aren't beginner's guides though... but specialized books on specific genera.. they come in handy when needed.

Personally, I realllllllly like Mushrooms Demystified By David Arora.
Lots of pictures, LOTS of information, lots of species and keys to ID things.
I use this book 99.9999% of the time when doing an ID.

Check the public library.... Mushrooms Demystified is a bit pricey and heavy for lugging in the field but certainly worth the money if you have extra to burn. I'm poor (or stingy) and thus rely on the public library and a mycological club's library. I would highly recommend joining one if your interest in mushrooms extends beyond merely psychoactive varieties. And whatever book you end up with pay attention to and learn use of the keys. They system may seem a bit cumbersome at first however your ability to id mushrooms will be greatly benefited. georgem

Try http://www.namyco.org/clubs/index.html. There are listings to mycological clubs across the country.
