Looking for a very specific kind of laptop
    #4938436 - 11/15/05 06:16 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Only the uber-geeks need read this, because otherwise you'll get lost halfway through this.

OK here's the deal. I'm shopping for a new laptop, but unbelievably no one makes exactly what i'm looking for. I absolutely HATE the widescreen laptop trend. Ever since i first used one i realized i just can't stand them. I want a screen with height to it, i don't care how wide it is. So i'm looking for a laptop with a 15.1" screen. Any other size is either too big or too small for my tastes.

But here's the catch. I'm looking to use this as a gaming laptop, so i want a high-end graphics card. So far I can't find any 15.1" laptops with an ATI X700 or X800, or an nVidia Geforce 6600 or 6800. I don't know what the deal with that is. Do those cards not support SXGA displays? Only WXGA displays?

I basically want to buy a fucking top-of-the-line machine that'll still have decent performance in 4 years. Here's basically what I'm looking for in terms of base specs:

- *** 15"/15.1" screen (no widescreen bullshit) ***
- Pentium M 760 or faster
- 2GB memory (don't care what kind but preferably 533mhz DDR)
- Top-of-the-fucking-line graphics card, preferably the same level of  performance as an ATI X800 or Geforce Go 6800
- 80GB HD or bigger
- DVD+RW drive
- Don't really care about anything else as long as it has built-in wireless NIC and doesn't weigh 9 fucking lbs.

I'm willing to shell out some serious money to anyone who builds a laptop like this that i can buy. And i'm willing to shell out some serious 5-star shroom ratings... 'cause uh, that's about all i can give you for helping me find this dream laptop.

help pls.

Well you're really limiting yourself by refusing to consider a widescreen display. Pretty much all the high-end systems have them and they really aren't that bad - it's just a different way of arranging the pixels. However, based on your specs I would recommend the Polynote MXM915AS as the closest match.

Peace,

-Y

Grateful jims suggestion looks like it could meet your needs. Try an Alienware too.

The laptop your looking for is damn expensive though dude.

FYI the Asus is a widescreen (1680 x 1050 WSXGA). Again, not necessarily a bad thing IMHO. But if you're going widescreen I can suggest better models. The Alienware m7700 or Dell XPS M170 come to mind.

Don't get the alienware, get the corresponding Clevo (the company that makes their computers). Alienware just adds a paintjob and $1000 to the price. Other than that, they're just what you're looking for. But they weigh a ton (I have one).

Well i've been thinking it over and i think i just might just give in and get the widescreen anyway. It seems like only the 15.4" models have  exactly what i want. i definitely don't want a 17"er though, that's too big. So far Asus and Clevo are the cheapest ones i can find with the specs i listed above (replacing the 15" screen with 15.4" widescreen). I think the Clevos actually look better than the Alienwares too. I was also looking at the ABS Mayhem G4 which has gotten good reviews. EDIT: Actually I just noticed that the ABS Mayhems are just Asus's with facelifts.

Thanks again for the tips, keep the suggestions coming.

Yeah, that's the Clevo that I have an older (~2 years) version of. Make sure you're not paying significantly more than for an unbranded Clevo. Compare the prices with here for example: http://www.pctorque.com/. I'll say again that these things are HEAVY. It looks like a laptop but doesn't feel like one :p

Dont get a nvidia 6600, as the x700 is faster. The x700 though, is certainly not a top of the line graphics card. I own an asus x70va, with 2 gigs of ram, 2 ghz centrino, and a x700. I can run most games perfectly, but FEAR certainly has some slow down with everything on full. The x800 is noticeably more powerful, and 6800 is even more powerful.

I have a 7800GT, Athlon 64 4000+ and 1GB of RAM. FEAR still slows down with everything on full!

Well, what resolution are you running it at? I use 800x600, with 2xanti-aliasing(sometimes) and anisotropic filtering.
And by slowdown I mean below 30, your slowdown is probably below 60.

Yeah I run at 1600x1200 since that's the native resolution of my displays. That's what really kills it, but even 1280x1024 is slow with 4xAA. Most other games run pretty fast though.
