Spore prints from contaminated batches

Well, as I said in an earlier post, I decided to give casing a shot. However, within 24 hours of doing so, I can smell the reason why 3 of my pf jars stalled. I opened the lid just to check, and the sick-sweet smell hit me like a hammer. Bleh. Stupid contams
Anyways, I have noticed that mycelium is starting to grow through some of the casing properly. This is a good sign I guess. Even if the mushies aren't edible, at least I can use it as a learning experience. So, if I do somehow manage to grow something, I figure I can get some usefulness out of it.
I was curious however, I remember reading that you can make a viable spore print from a mushroom in a contaminated batch. How true is this? Are there any special precautions that I'd need to take?
The last thing I'd want to do is grow a mushroom out of this contaminated batch, and make a spore print, only to have black mold grow in from everything the spore print touches. Any advice?

Spore prints can be taken from contaminated casings. I would sever the cap from it's stipe while still attached to the casing, as to not send mold spores buzzing everywhere.
Take a print. For further reassurance, inoculate agar with print. If contaminants are present, isolate the mycelium and transfer to another dish. From there you can make an LC, or inoculate some grains.
While you're at it, try to isolate the rhizo myc. There is a small chance you may isolate a non-fruiting mycelium, so try to get 2 cultures.
Hope that helps!

Abesolutely! haha, I try to ignore online confrontations anymore... too many people are just looking to "enlarge their ep33ns."
As for the suggestions, I'm going to give it my best shot. I don't have access to agar, so I'll just stick with the first option.
I seem to remember reading something about waiting until the second flush of a contaminated batch to take the spore print, but for the life of me I can't seem to find it again. I'm not getting my hopes up that I'll even get any fruiting, but on the off chance I do, I'd like to get something out of it
Though, I will admit that I'm glad I tried out casing at least once now, so I know a little bit more what everyone is talking about! Maybe I'll luck out and the contam will get beat down by the uber strong cubie mycelium? Probobly not, but one can dream, right?

I've seen mycelium over-power contam before...the MEAN GREEN actually..
Threw it out anyway...but it was interesting to watch..
I would suggest taking a print from the 2nd or 3rd flush as to get a bigger print...idk about reason with contams though
and what do you mean 'Absolutely'...come on now...
*sees that's what one gets for helping out*

*none taken* You're Welcome, Good Luck with those prints.
(PS - don't hesitate to continue your practice with casings. Try spawning to poo. Pretty contam. resistant and MUCH better fruits, in every way)

Well, my goal for now is to give sclerotia a shot. I'm a little noided by growing actual fruitbodies in my dorm room. I have a lot of people walking in and out all the time, and it's kind of hard to hide the compact flourescent above a terrarium that pretty obviously has some mushrooms growing inside. I've had to keep people out of the room for a few weeks, and my door has been locked, which people probobly consider a bit odd (I don't like locked doors, personal thing). So, I'd like to give something with more of a stealth factor a shot, while still having the chance to learn.
I've never tried sclerotia (growing or ingesting), and I'd like to give it a shot.
I was also considering trying some edible mushrooms, at least until I'm not confined to a dorm. That way if anyone would notice, I don't have any dirt under my nails. But from what I've seen, most of those seem pretty reliant on poo and advanced growing teks.

Thanks man! Have a good sleep. I'm up until I'm done with this term paper. Procrastination for the win!
