Tomorrow I'm leaving for a little backcountry boarding trip with a good friend. We're hiking to the summit of Guanella Pass(Guanella Pass connects I-70 to highway 9 for all you coloradans) and staying in an abandoned ski lodge that a resort left there after closing many years ago.
The divide, which is about 15-20 minutes further west of Guanella Pass has gotten around 24" of new snow the past 2-3 days and we're expecting another 10" tonight. Can you say powder day
We'll be staying in the lodge until late thursday afternoon when we'll start heading back into town. If all goes according to plan I'll have many pics to post in this thread upon my return. Wish me luck and I'll see you all thursday

Almost forgot about this thread...
Anyways the trip was everything I could have hoped for. We didn't start hiking until 5:30pm Tuesday night because of my friends work schedule. By then it was already dark but fortunately we had the full moon on our side. The hike which we originally predicted would take 2 hours max ended up taking us until 9:30 to finish.(40lb packs, knee deep snow, and ski equipment didn't help much ) Hiking up open runs of untouched powder with the full moon illuminating the snow was breathtaking.
We reached the old ski patrol warming hut and found that we had the place to ourselves. The hut has a pretty cool bohemian vibe to it with books laying around, writing on the walls, and an old wood stove to keep the place warm. That night we cooked up some soup and chowed down on some bread and carried on in our general weirdness until we fell asleep.
The next day we woke up around 10 and promptly hit the slopes. The hut sits atop what used to be Geneva Basin ski area so we had some nice open slopes available to us without having to go above tree line where avalanche danger is most severe. We only got a couple of runs in that day as a 30 second run equates to about a 30 minute hike back up. Around 4-5 that day we decided to head back into town that night rather than staying another day realizing that we would be far too tired and sore to ski another day. Boarding down a mountain with a pack made for an interesting experience.
All and all a beautiful trip. If any of you are interested in the exact location of this hut give me a PM and I'll gladly let you in on one of colorados little secrets.
I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. I'm still shooting analogue and I've yet to have the film developed.
Note to self: get your broke ass some snow shoes

Well it's gonna be a while before I can get the pics developed. Here's a site I found on the net detailing the same trip we made though
