Spawning with BRF?
    #4933055 - 11/14/05 03:48 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

are there any advantages of using grain as opposed to BRF when spawning to poo? Aside from the shakeability factor?

Theres more inoculation points when you add to your bulk substrate, meaning it will colonize faster. You could also just make sure your BRF cakes are crumbled very well.

go with wbs man, i spawned BRF to poo and had horrible results because i didnt crumble it well enough. Half of my casing didnt even colonize.

so then its mainly the small size of individual chunks of myc that gives it the advantage? I only ask because I am having NO luck with corn and am gonna go back to BRF

anyone have thoughts about mixing verm with popcorn before innoculating to help with some of the moisture problems?

The grains (eg millet, rye) have a higher thyrotrophin (sp?) contents as well.

but isnt that overshadowed by the spawn to poo? i think I was asking about using the Alien substrate formula and was told no matter what grain you use, if youre spawning to poo it doesnt matter...

Instead of going back to BRF why not try Wild Bird Seed?

Corn is notoriously hard to work with. WBS is pretty easy. I inoculated a bunch of qt jars for the first time last week and they're going pretty good right now. Read up on how agar does WBS, thats the method i followed and it worked like a charm.

Mixing verm with the corn in very common.
Are you following the tek right? Letting it soak, simmer (optional), straining...and that jazz

Are you making your own spore syringes?

Are you being very clean with your procedures?

I belive the grains to play a large part in the nutrient base of your substrate along with the poo.

I am being as clean as is possible without having a thousand dollar setup
I dont know where I am going wrong, I cant understand why I get contams or NO growth at all. Optimal temps, sanitation...
No, Im using Ralphsters spores, and it worked seemingly for my LCs, but then stopped...Its not his products, I am sure of that. It is something that I have overlooked, but for some reason I cant find out what it is. maybe its my temeratrues...

Not much really. The poo is the bulk of your nutes/growth and so forth. The cakes/WBS are just spawns. They may have a small role in it, but I believe with a pepsi challenge you wouldnt be able to tell the difference.

Now if it was just plain ol' cakes cased, against plain WBS cased...thatd be a different story.
