I am a first time grower in the process of buying all of the products for cultivation. Given the fact that I am a college student with limited access to money I was wondering if there is an alternative to sterilization besides the use of a pressure cooker? Or should I just save up and buy one?? any advice would be awesome. thanks!

much more time intensive and I cannot directly comment on the effectiveness.

pressure cooker autoclave sterilizer
all american is the brand to get
if you are patient, a great deal will come along eventually.

You can buy it, use it and return it. Some substrates only need steaming, like BRF PF cakes. I have had some success microwaving.

I'd get a good PC if at all possible. Look up fractional sterilization if you are trying to sterilize whole grains without a PC. It's time consuming, but it will work if you can't get your hands on a PC yet.

before my friend got a PC, she used the deepest frying pan or saute pan with a lid she could find. A dutch oven would also work. She could place 6 or 7 half pint jars in it, add water half way up the side of the jars, pop on the tight filleting lid,and simmer for 1.25 hours. Keep the heat down, especially at first or you will crack jars. You may elect to put a dishcloth under the jars to keep them off the bottom of the pan. I bet she did 150 jars like this over a couple of years and never got contams from this method. It is definitely worth a try if you are short of funding.

That works for BRF/verm, not whole grains.
