Poor man's vs. average man's methods
    #489801 - 12/13/01 02:15 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

My friend has 11 jars colonizing. He is trying to decide what type of growing chamber that he wants to use when it comes time. This friend does not have a lot of extra cash to spend on this. Most of the full terrarrium setups are out of the question, but he has been considering either the poor man's or the average man's methods. The average man's method seems like it would be a little lower maintenance and also might keep the humidity more stable, but it also costs a little more. Does anyone have any advice/experience with these two methods? Is it worth it to spend the extra cash for the better setup or will the poor man's method do just fine? Or are there other methods around the same price range that would work just as well? Thanks

Get a clear Rubbermaid and a bag of perlite. Should only cost about $15.

I use large freezer bags with perlite in the bottom. Very very cheap. Using this method, my Iast batch produced about 70 shrooms with one cake on the first flush using the casing tek.

I don't see any way that you got 70 shrooms w/ one cake. One cake only produces 5-7 grams of dry mushies on average. That would mean the average weight of each dry shroom weighed only .1 of a gram, which most of us know is hardly anything. Was that a typo? Please explain

I should add that my friend plans on leaving the cakes intact in the growing chamber. Casing seems like a lot more work and cost. I know that it might be worth it, but my friend is a newbie and wants to keep things as simple as possible at first.

I think cakes are harder to take care of than casings. To me casings are simpler. Then again, I could never really grow with cakes. A rubbermaid will work great for either casings or cakes. For casings add nothing to the bottom, and for cakes add perlite to the bottom for humidity. You can buy a rubbermaid for $3.

i think casing with verm only is an extremely easy method and gets good results.

I got pretty good results from the Poor Man setup this way:
Put level layer wet newspaper in bottom (using sterile water)
Plastic covering top of newsprint
thin layer dry verm (optional)
1 1/2 - 2" level layer crumbled mycelium
1/2 - 3/4" 50/50 verm & peat moss
This bottle is still going after 3 flushes that produced some nice sized shrooms 5-7"

Your right mate, the total weight of the first flush dried was 7.5 grams. They were all pretty small, the biggest one being about 3.5 inches tall. The second flush has just produced my biggest mushroom yet though. It weighed 15g fresh, 5.5 inches tall. What is the average size of most cubensis?

Which way is going to produce mushrooms the fastest and have the lowest rate of contamination? It seems to me that casing would allow contaminates in easier and take longer due to the fact that the mycelium has to have time to repair. I could be way off on this though, my friend is a newbie. What do people think?

You should definately go for casing. On my first couple of atempts I used cakes and only got a about four small shrooms per cake. The next time I used the pf tek casing method and got loads more. So far I've made 8 casings and lost 1 to contamination. Just practice sterilre tecniques and follow the tek exactly and you should be fine. You can find lots of casing teks on this site.
