Psilocybe caerulipes (pics)
    #492247 - 12/15/01 06:40 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

Funally here are the long awaited pics, If they are not what I think they are, then I have no idea.

That is it, so are they indeed caerulipes? I believe so, note the blueing, the spore print was purple brown, the cap had a removable gelatinous pelicule. the smaller ones blued extremely upon handling. Let the ID begin.

Wow SThomas, nice find!!! Those don't look like any of the species I'm familiar with. My guess is you have the real deal (caerulipes). :)

Ok Cardboard...now how about some reasons why they are not. Have you ever seen them with your own eyes? I live in the geographic area where they are found, they have blue feet, purple/brown sporeprint, the right smell, they stain moderately blue and they match the description in the Audubon guide. I don't know what else to say...but this is the conclusion I have come to...if anyone else has any proof as to them being something else, I will be more than happy to listen.

I would come to the same conclusion, considering habitat, color, geographical location and other physical characteristics, that they are caerulipes. What would lead me to beleive otherwise would be their size.I've always assumed that caerulipes was a small to medium size mushroom. Those things look huge.Big and meaty. But as seeing as how I've never actually seen caerulipes (for sure anyway), I can't make an ID either way.
They sorta resemble weilii's also. That's LK's department. They're definitely not what I found earlier. My mushies were small.
Levi7 needs to take a look,he's the only one I know of that's possibly picked caerulipes.I'm not even sure if MJ has picked that species, although it seems he has a friend in Ohio (or somewhere like that)that has picked the caerulipes.Let some of these other folks take a look.
Like I mentioned earlier, the only thing that would lead me away from'em being caerulipes, is their size, and I'm probably just pissing in the wind on that one.
Of course they may be Psilocybe sthomas.Sounds like a winner to me,anyway ; )

Those are way to big to be caerulipes. I would be very suprised if those are an active psilocybe, they look more along time lines of some kinda of stropharia to me. I dont think Levi7 has ever picked an caerulipes, he lives in the pacific northwest with me. I have no experiance with caerulipes i admit but i have picked a shitload of psychoactive psilocbyes to know the characteristics and those just arent doing it for me. I would be alot easier to tell what those are if they were decently fresh and in more prime condition.

Sweet discovery SThomas!

Im not sure why your thinking Caerulipes..

I am not sure what they are, but i will keep them in mind and try to helpya get a +i.d.

Lizard King, Mj & Woodsman might have the most educated of guesses here. =)

Keep on shroomin,

Hmmmm...I'm stumped, but I'm also stoned at the moment :) I need some time to study this one, its very interesting though. It is definitely an active Psilocybe, no doubt about it, but from just looking at those pics and making general measurement estimations, those are't Ps. caerulipes or Ps. quebecensis. They do sorta resemble Ps. weilii with the yellowish stem, but they are definitely not Ps. weilii either. I would guess it may be a new species or a species that is known but not this continent(Hope my stoned ass spelled that right :) It may be something that is known from europe, there are lots of species that paul doesn't list in his book. It kinda resembles Ps. natalensis, but your mushrooms don't have the long stem small cap look that is a consistant feature of Ps. natalensis.

Anyways, I'm stumped for now. Great find though, and great pics ST!!

take care,

LK,

Yeah where is LK when you need him, kudos on MJ, Levi7 and Woodsman too. I am drawing a blank, if they are not caerulipes then what? I strongly believe they are active though...whatever they might be. They were found just after a snowfall, so they are not prime specimens...but I grabbed some of the mycelium and half of the woodchips are npw colonized, will have to see what the fruits do look like in their prime condition, without slug or snow damage.

Cheers

154 thread views and only a handful of replies...of those that did I thank you. If Lizard King is right and they are a new species then that is pretty cool, either way they look and smell like magic to me...anyone else have an educated opinion on these?

MJ just asked me to send him some samples, which I will do if I don't get an ID soon. The problem is with these I only found a few, and did not get the greatest spore prints out of them...only on paper towel, and off of the cap of one...seen in the first picture...that was underneath the other one. I have just sent a lengthy e-mail to one of Canada's most experienced mycologists, who happens to operate a herbarium nearby for the government. He has discovered a new psilocybe species in the area a few years ago, and identified some of the others in our area..so we shall see what he has to say. I may send the same e-mail off to Stamets as well...including my pics. If not I will send some of the samples to MJ...which I would have already done if I had some more...cheers.

Good luck, St. Thomas!
It's a possibility that you've found a new species. At least, I'm hoping so! Hehe!
Those mushrooms are quite meaty, man!
The bluing is so vivid!
Definitely a Psilocybian! Although, it may not actually be a Psilcoybe species. I'm thinking Stropharia, based on the pics.
Nonetheless, I'm betting she'll take you for a ride or two! Hehe!
Stay cool!-Levi7.

Thanks Levi! Well nobody seems to be able to give them a positive ID, so it would be cool if they were a new species, I would be very happy to have discovered a new one. Will keep you posted on my ID progress.
Cheers

Hello SThomas,

I was looking through PMOTW today,
and i thought of ya when i read the description
for - Psilocybe makarorae Johnston & Buchanan (1996).

P. makarorae is a newly described species found growing in woody debris - in New Zealand.

Stamets also comments that it is very closely related to
- Psilocybe caerulipes.

No photos are with the description - butcha might want to check that out!
