What would you recommend for a great gaming laptop?

And why? I might get one of those first before upgrading my box. What would you get? Links would be appreciated.

"great gaming laptop" is a contradiction in terms, IMO. Are you planning to carry a separate mouse and keyboard with it?

I don't game very much, but in my experience with buying desktops, I feel its best to set a budget first.....then go from there.

If you want a good gaming laptop get an AlienWare, but expect to be paying 2600+ for anything decent. I put one together there and it came to just over3k before the $200 mail in rebate.
For that kind of money you could build yourself a WAY faster desktop system.
Why do you want a laptop for gaming anyways?

the only truly intelligent use i have seen for one yet is VJing (video jockeying) which can require serious CPU, RAM, HDD space and GPU all at once and times 2 on a table.

I have an Alienware Area51m 5500 and it is quite an awesome laptop, I fully suggest it. The only problem I have is overheating, but that is just whenever I'm compiling multiple things.

Dont go alienware, as unless theyve finally updated their laptops, they are all pentium 4's. I got an Asus z70va, which has a 2.13ghz centrino, 2 gigs of ram, and an ati x700 for under 2 grand. If you want a better video card, like the nvidia geforce 6800 go, or the ati x800, or I think nvidia has a 7800 go out now, then check out dell.

The reason I didnt go for the dell xp2 with the 6800 go, is battery life. Sure it does better for games, but the battery life is noticeably cut down, so keep this in mind. The refresh, which is what I have, is probably the best trade off out there that I could find. I can play doom3 on full everything at over 60fps. The game FEAR caused my laptop to slow down however, as that game relies purely on the video card. I could still run it at full everything at around 30 fps, usualy more, but sometimes it would drop a bit below.

Check out the ABS G4 and G5s. Very good value for the money and built just for gaming.

Well, because I travel a lot, and I like playing games. basically I should have put this differently. I just want the cheapest laptop that will play battlefield2 and look good.
I don't wanna spend any more than $1,500.

That will play BF2 on medium and some high settings. That price is in Canadian though.

That looks nice. Thanks for the link. At today's exchange rate that's $1799.86 U.S.
Hopefully you Canadians' money will drop in value by the time I'm ready to order.

Thats most likely the cheapest notebook you will find that will play BF2 with respectable settings.
