Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act By Doug Halonen
If the industry doesn't take significant steps to make it easier for parents to control what their children view on television, Congress will step in and legislate. That was a warning shot fired by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in a speech Wednesday in Washington.
Story continues below...
"The amount of questionable content spilling across our screens is growing by the year," Sen. Obama said at a press conference to release a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation that says the number of sex scenes on TV has been increasing dramatically over the past several years.
"Once again, we find ourselves asking those in charge to serve the needs of a nation that has a higher calling than simply peddling indecency and materialism for profit," the senator said.
The study, which examined a representative example of broadcast and cable TV network shows, said that 70 percent of programs included some sexual content this year (with an average of five sex scenes per hour), while only 56 percent did so in 1998 (with 3.2 sex scenes per hour). Among shows that had sexual content, the study said, 14 percent this year included a reference to sexual risks or responsibilities, up from 9 percent in 1998.
But Sen. Obama said he is particularly concerned about the impact television is having on the ability of parents to instill positive values in their children. "Raising your children this way has become exceedingly difficult in a mass media culture that saturates our airwaves with a steady stream of sex, violence and materialism," he said.

What a crock of shit. How about parents take a little responsibilty for their children for once and stop blaming the television. Maybe if they didn't use the TV as a babysitter, we wouldn't have this problem to begin with.
I thought Obama would be above something like this. He's sinking to Hillary levels.

Americans love their sex, violence, and materialism. Thats what happens when a culture is desensitized. I don't think it should be legislated but I would actually kind of like to see our culture focus on more important things like art, music, and spirituality...Like another golden age. Oh well, back to internet porn for me.

About Obama...hes an interesting guy. My sister is involved in his political entourage. I think he is pretty level-headed and he has a good future but he is surrounded by left-wing nuts like my sister. Remember he is from Illinois (better known as Chicago) and chicago is only next to San Francisco in liberal extremism. If he can continue to be relatively moderate in these times, I think he will definately go somewhere.

I know. It makes me sad to see Obama carry issues like this b/c I really thought he was a hopeful for the Dem's.

I'm not exactly sure what he's proposing. If the legislation is created only to allow parents more control, then I'm behind it 100%.

How would such control be implemented?
This sounds like a worthless attempt to grab headlines on a noncontroversial issue. I've been favorably impressed with Obama in the past, but this isn't helping.

An improved ratings system? Possibly ratings for commercials, as I suggested a few weeks ago?... I don't know what else. I'd like to hear him elaborate, assuming he isn't just pulling this out of his ass.

A total token gesture, and a sure sign that he plans on running for president in '08. He's using the Clinton strategy of moving to the center in order to woo middle America. Nothing will come of this except media attention.

i strongly agree about the first-amendment issues at stake...however..sen obama might still have a valid point ..

neither does the article say that obama is attacking the sexual content per se..but rather "indecency and materialism"..and there is nothing that could be more indecent than the type of content discussed in the lynx above...

If he wants to attack indecency and materialism, he should strike at CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. This is slightly disappointing. I thought he was different from the usual centrist/right-wing member of the Democratic Party.

Fox News is my favorite station. They need to have that playing all day every day in public schools. Obama is half black and half white and still accuses white people of discrimination all the time. I guess he doesn't look white enough.

fuck TV, censor the Bible. http://biblicalindecency.home.comcast.net/index.html
I mean for real, what more control do parents need? After the superboob incident, I was saying how people should use their damn v-chips, etc. Then FOX came up with that super gay "Have no fear, the V-chip is here" bit.
Seriously if you're a God warrior and you're sitting there about to drown your kids for watching an rerun of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and you see this commercial, go out and buy a v-chip you lazy oppressive bastards! If you can't find some way to censor YOUR OWN CHILDREN then just FUCKING SHOOT YOUR TELEVISION if you hate the content it has so much.
Television only corrupt children because parents own televisions and are careless with what they let their kids watch. Do you have directv? Some sort of digital cable? Then use the god damned parental controls!
This is a non-issue... it would be spiffy if all televisions in the future had mandatory parental control features, so as to help parents screen content...... but that's all that is necessary.
We need porno on latenight TV. We need profanity. Less violence would be good I guess, but ..........
for real..... and who cares about sex? Excessively graphic and "acceptable" violence is a little bit just slightly more detrimental to the psyche.
I would favor some sort of initiative to expand the access that parents have to "parental" controls, but there should never be any legislation that regulates the content of the media... that's an act of tyranny as far as I'm concerned.

Om Namah Shivaya, I tell you What!

If I had that much confidence in his leadership qualities, I might agree, and be willing to turn a blind eye to this political ploy. But while I thought of him for a while as slightly less of a douchebag than the other Democratic hopefuls, I don't have that much hope for him. And since the Republicans are likely to put up another neocon in the next election, I suspect I'll be voting Libertarian or Green, or not at all.
