Increased yield with homone spray

Idea: Soak young mushrooms in sterile water. Spray mushroom substrate with solution. You are extracting the hormones and artificialy inducing fruiting. I would think this would cause more fruiting and maybe even make hard to fruit species fruit easily. I know some commercial mushroom companies do this. Has anyone tried it? Will anyone try it?

how young? before veil seperation? what kind of shelf life dose this hormone solution have? sounds like a good idea perhaps using a whole batch of youngyens for the next batch or flush. any one that tries this please post your findings

I've wanted to try that for a long time. . .it's mentioned in Stamets' books, though it's described as something that still needs work [and only seems to work with some species]. I'd even go a step further, take your young fruitbody [which I agree, should contain a concentration of fruiting hormones/signals] and BLEND it into an appropriate volume of water. Let the solids settle out, and decant the resulting solution into a spray bottle. Just soaking might not get the goodies out, fungal cell walls are tough to break open. In fact, I'd even blend the hell out of it. Very interested in checking anyone's results with this; it's important to have a non-treated, identical tray to compare with, though.

Of course, you could just freeze them first to rupture the cell walls. You might want to look into using different solvents too, there's no guarantee that whatever signals that you're looking for will be water soluble.. Plus the amounts in which a horomone would be present would be very very small so you should be damn sure that you get it all.

stamets says that the horomones are h2o soluble, which is not to say that it isnt possible that there is a better solvent, but it is probable safe to start with water. and yes i think that freezing or blending would get the best results. good luck with the extractions. kidrhubarb-

I would use either pinhead or primordium stage fruit. A blender might be good. I think thin slicing or just crumbling might be suffecient also. I dont know how hormones break down. I would make the solution the same day I would use it. Not knowing what shelf life would be I wouldnt give it long to sit around and keep it refrigerated. Since this is used in comercial production you might be able to buy hormones. I have no clue. The hormones might not be right for the species you are growing. They do use different species for hormone collection than what they want to fruit. I cant remember where I read about it. Who knows about buying something though. I would make it. I would have substrate started with about a week difference in time. Take the substrate started first and fruit it. Collect pinheads and primidoria of the first flush. Make the solution and spray the substrate you started later. Observe time to induce fruiting, flush size, and repeat flushes with repeat sprays. I would use lot's of controls. Temp, humidity, light, air exchange, substrate, age of mycelical growth, stage of growth used to collect hormones, weight ratio of mushroom and water used for extraction, amount sprayed, and I'm sure you can think of some more. My point being the only variable should be the hormones. Good luck. Hope someone tries it. I will in the future.
