I finally went up to the guys w/ the Horse carriages at Central Park and asked if they would mind if I grabbed some horse shit.
Of course these two guys just looked at me and said "Nahh gahead be my guest". So on go the surgical gloves and scooped a couple of pounds pratically right outta the horses ass. Now that I have fresh horse shit how do I get it the right consistency? I have it in the freezer and was gonna thaw it and freeze it a couple of times? Hows that? Thanx..

First think you need to do is put it outside, it probably smells a lot. After that just let it lay there for a while, you may need to heat it as it's cold outside where I live. Then just let it compost on it own. Let the bacteria and all that stuff do their job. Wait until it gets hard and old enough where it doesn't relay smell like shit anymore. Then soak in water for a day as it's gana be hard. Put it in a pillow case and put that in near boiling water and leave it in there for a good hour or so. after that hang the case up outside where it can drain, don't work the outside air wont add any contams. After a few days go back, take some out, squeeze out any extra H2O and mix with colonized grain in your chamber.
It would have been easier to go get some from a field where it's already gana be aged. Using fresh dung is garinteed contams.

Tell you the truth it doesnt really smell. I brought it home in a doubled-up plastic shopping bad on the TRAIN during RUSH HOUR (haha) and no one gave me a second look. Anyway...
Is there a reason for letting it dry and harden naturally or can I bake it/nuke it to the proper consistency?

I'm not the most experienced with using dung so another opinion would be greatly appreciated but I think you need to let he bacteria's take their course before mushrooms will have a chance to colonize it.

There has to something more to it than just the dung being dry? Bacteria is one good possibility or maybe the level of PH? Whats the ratio of dung to substrate? Anyone point me to a good tek or should I just checkout the bulk teks? Thanx..

Just follow my directions above and spawn with, I would suggest, 2 or 3 quarts colonized grain per 10 lb. of dung substrate (After pasturizing/draining). That much spawn would colonize it fairly quickly and provide for more. Adding straw to the mix would relay be superb. Dung/Straw combo makes for some giants.
