Internet Security Questions
    #4907403 - 11/07/05 11:23 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I've been doing some reading and I have some general security issues I'd like to address. I'm posting this in both Science and Technology and Security and Safety, as I feel it's pertinent in both.

I'd like to start using a truly anonymous proxy server. The problem is, I only vaguely know what that means. I was wondering if anyone knew of a confirmed anonymous proxy server, and how to make sure that doesn't interfere with my normal internet activities. I'm assuming this will increase my security and privacy, which is what I'm trying to do (essentially limiting the possible information anyone can find out about me online).

I'd also like to set up an anonymous e-mail account to use. If anyone knows of a way to do this (other than simply logging into yahoo.com through a proxy) I'd like to know about it. I'm not sure if there are (truly) anonymous e-mail accounts just available.

Other than that, I've simply installed better anti-virus and spy-ware software on my computer. Any other tips or links to useful programs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help.

I also read that if you try to access a web-based e-mail account while using a proxy server it can cause problems, since there has to be a direct connection (meaning the proxy has to support HTTPS and the browser has to be configured to use the proxy for the Secure protocol in addition to the ordinary HTTP).

That is what I read, but I have no idea what that means. Could anyone explain how I go about making sure the proxy server I decide on support HTTPS (whatever that is) and then how I actually configure my browser for the Secure protocol?

Again, thanks for the help.

go to a proxy website that has https:// in the beginning and you'll be able to access secure websites with it.

Read about proxy chains, instead of:

[You]-->[proxy]-->[server]-->[proxy]-->[you]

You'd get:
[You]-->[proxy]--[proxy]-->[server]-->[proxy]--[proxy]-->[you]

And so forth. it'd give you extra protection.
Also choose proxy servers that are in a random country where english isnt their first spoken language as obscure as posible.

As for annonymouse Email address, try dodgeit.com no need to sign up for any account, just pick a totaly random address that no one could guess.

regfregwe241r4r4rfw@dodgeit.com

Good proxies are hard to find and generally expire quickly, I would suggest using tor or jap (google to find them).

Also, it is best to use proxies where the country they are located in does not cooperate with US LEO. I used to have a list of these countries and I'll see if I can find it later, but it isn't that hard to figure out. Basically any country that we don't have good relations with...ie: China, N Korea, ones like that.

Also, this is only for the overly paranoid. If you have a chain of proxies all bouncing around to different countries, you would have to be doing some HEAVY shit for any agency to follow up on all of them and figure out your real IP. If you followed the above advice though, these countries would definitely not cooperate with US authorities in any way.

One more thing, you want these proxies to be of the rating highly anonymous.

I've found the whole proxy thing to be time intensive, laborious and very frustrating all the time. After you search for thousands of potential proxies you have to filter them for Country of origin and security. Even after all is said and done you're lucky to get one or two working secure proxies a day. The next day you have to go through the same process again because the proxies you found the previous day aren't working anymore...fuck! Right now I'm trying out Firefox (with the NoScript extension), Tor, JAP and Privoxy. You can chain all three programs through Firefox but your connection will be slow as hell if it works at all. I prefer to use Privoxy and Tor or Privoxy and JAP. Although, since these programs are new technology you won't really know if they are working well enough until it's too late...oh well, they at least provide pretty good security by themselves and better security through a proxy. I'm no security expert by any means but the NoScript extension along with privoxy and Tor or JAP seems pretty good, in theory anyway.

Steganos looks like an onion router...isn't it the same thing as Tor or JAP? I've been reading a few reviews on the steganos software and it doesn't seem any more secure than Tor or JAP either. What makes Steganos worth paying for when Tor and JAP are free?
