What not to pick!! (pics of deadly Galerinas)
    #490334 - 12/13/01 08:33 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

Not sure of the exact species of these mushrooms, but they are surely Galerinas, and likely deadly. To me they look like G. autumnalis, but those are suppose to only grow on the west coast. Whatever type of galerina they are, they are everywhere throughout the southeast right now, so be careful and make sure of your IDs. These were found on a rotting log.

Anyways, here are some pics of what not to eat. I can see how a newbie would think they were bluing at the base when in fact they are black. The yellow translucent like stem along with the black kinda of make a bluish color, but it is still definitely black.

In Kentucky we have a 'shroom that all of the local country "hillbillies" teach there kids about that is posin. Your pics look very much like the meduim size brown 'shrooms that grow in the lawns around here. Most people here refer to them as "toad-stools" and it is well known that they are deadly.

Your strain isnt the same, but the two do favor each other.

Those are the deadly Galerina autumnalis...not only found on the west coast, found frickin everywhere. They are the bane of my mushroom hunting existance, the larger ones from above look like gyms, the smaller ones like magic. Until you flip them over and see that ring and the orange stem...nice pics LK

I'm in your area LK so thanks for the warning. But to me if it has those whitish looking gills, and spores that aren't black or purple, I don't even dream of messing with it.

After looking at the pics again, someone would be pretty dumb to eat those. The only magic mushroom they closely resemble IMHO are cubensis's, which don't grow on wood anyway.
