has anyone ordered oyster grain spawn from Field and Forest? I did about 3 months ago and was not happy with the spawn or the results. I did not know though if it was just me or what so I am not downing them at this point.

I ordered 3 bags and used 1 when i got them and the other 2 about 6 days ago. The looked in better condition after being in the frig for 3 months then they did when I got them.

When I first got the spawn I could not see any white in there at all.

Ill let you know how this batch turns out.

I have bought grain spawn from them before, oyster and shiitake. The spawn came in filter patched bag that was rolled up and placed inside another plastic bag and rolled up. I prefer their plug spawn much more than their grain spawn.

I used the oyster spawn right away and had great results. When I first received it, I removed it from the first bag and unrolled the filter patch bag, spread the grain out a bit inside the bag, and then let it sit for about a week until there was good mycelium growth on the grain.

The shiitake did not do well at all, but I think it was my fault. I left the shiitake spawn inside the plastic bag and kept it in the fridge for a couple of weeks, and I think I suffocated it to death. The rye berries put out little mycelium after I let it sit out as I did the oyster spawn. I waited and waited but nothing really happened. The smell from the bag's filter was kinda sour after I had waited and saw little growth, so I am not sure if the smell was caused by the dead shiitake, or bacteria as there were no other signs of bacteria even after I let it sit out for a few weeks.

If I recall, they guarantee their spawn, and recommend using it within 30 day of receiving. I guess the mistake I made with the shiitake spawn was not letting it recover right away to see if it was any good, otherwise I would have called them and asked them to replace it, or refund it.

I have had really good results with their plug spawn, and in their recent catalog they are now offering smaller quanities of spawn for the kitchin grower.
