i am going to buy a pressure cooker today. Any advice on what models to get would be really helpful. I was thinking of getting this one on account of its on sale and because I can set the psi. I dont really know to much about pressure cookers, do electric ones need a stove? and what psi is good for sterilizing pf tek jars. Thanks

If you have the cash, go for a 22qt size. You'll find the smaller ones to just be a pain in the ass eventually. I have 2 small ones that sitting in my closet collecting dust for years now. If my 22 qt. screwed up, I'd get another one, rather than resort to the small ones again.

Electric ones do not need a stove. I use a 3 qt electric PC that fits either 5 1/2-pt jars or 1 spawn bag at a time.
I like the electric cause you can just plug it in in your room and let it go while you're on the computer or whatever (make sure you use your head and don't create a fire hazard).

Thanks, I just bought a big electric one but have 2 problems. The cooker only has presets (beef, chicken, rice etc.) and neither the psi nor the temperature or the time can be set. For example beef cooks for 30-35 minutes, soup 23 minutes...... Should I just put my pf tek jars in and keep it restarting it for an hour or should I return my pressure cooker. Also my jars already have holes in them from previous attempts, is it okay to just cover the inoculation holes with some tape to prevent steam from getting in? Thanks

I'd replace the PC, but that's just me! You could probably just keep starting it so it runs for at least an hour, but it would be a pain. For the jars, cover them with tinfoil secured with an elastic band when yo PC them. After you inoculate them, cover the holes with micropore tape for filtered gas exchange.
Good luck with it!

If I decide to keep the pc and keep turning it on untill an hour has gone by should I release the steam after every 20 minute period or just wait untill the hours up to do it. And when I let them cool off should I leave them in as is or release the steam.

If i where you i would really get another pressure cooker what you have sounds like a crockpot or something but then again i dont know much about electric pc's. Also you wouldnt want to let the steam out all at once you want to let the steam escape naturally so your jars dont crack ive taken the rocker off and let the steam escape the pc that way but it is taking a chance ive lost a few older jars that way and one new one.
PS. check the instruction manual and see what PSI it goes up too for each setting. But you should really get a new pc itll be a worthwhile investment.

NEVER release the steam/pressure from any pressure cooker. Let it cool naturally before removing the pressure regulator or opening the PC!
Read the manual!!! A PC can be very dangerous if you don't!

Really ive never read anything about it being dnagerous only that jars could crack. Which has happend tho if it is dangerous im deffnetly not going to do it any more tho ive never had a problem (besides losing a few jars). What about placing something under the rocker that helps steam escape a litle faster any problem with that?

Just let it cool on it's own. Once you remove it from the heat, the most it will take is an hour to cool. You need to let your jars cool for a few hour anyway before you innocculate them. So why risk getting hurt or breaking the jars. Remember - This hobby requires patience
