Life = Good, Death = Bad ?
    #2664480 - 05/11/04 05:39 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

a little excerpt from my journal of sorts...
---

The animal need for survival is the spark which keeps us alive. Being human, we have a great awareness of death, our demise as an individual on this plane, the antithesis of our natural genetic survival instinct.
It is safe to say that on some level we possess an ingrained and, in light of its genetic nature, involuntary fear of the perceived yet inevitable end to our life. We're driven to fear by our genes - a process so subtle we don't really notice it. Fear is the means by which we satisfy the intrinsic need to survive on a long term scale.
Is that fear necessary to satisfy our nearly indomitable survival instinct?
Rather than fearing the inevitable, could we not function just as well by operating out of a feeling of appreciation and even love for the experience of being alive?

We may see death as a failure of survival.
We may feel that to die is to fail the most basic part of ourselves.
Another aspect of the fear of death is the thought of what lies beyond the death of the body - "what happens to our consciousness?".
This unknown is like a magnet for fear. The idea that the very essence of one's identity would be at the mercy of an entirely unknown force can be terrifying, which is why it may be to the benefit of many to not dwell upon thoughts of that nature and instead focus upon the immediate reality of life in the present and thus base one's reasoning and actions upon an awareness of the moment rather than speculation tied to a fear of the inevitable future.

Right now I am afraid to die - but I'm hoping on changing that. Just because I don't understand it, doesn't mean I need to fear it.

agreed. In a book i just read, Stillness Speaks by Eckhart Tolle, he makes a similar point, the ego hates "death." In our society talking of dying is often thought of as sad and depressing, yet its the cycle of life.

you may have heard of the tibetan book of the dead. Death, like Life is an important cycle and should be celebrated. We are all made of atoms, just like the leaves and decaying matter that consumes our parts when we die. We are all universally connected in the one unified field. the ego forms this "me" that individualizes it and the idea of losing the ego formed through the mind is terrifying. death, like life, is the same.

thats why often when you dream of death it symbolizes life, and vice versa (when a family member of mine died, the night before i dreamed of a newborn baby.)

I have no fear of death; I actually welcome it as a refreshing change of scenery. Being surrounded for a lifetime by competing, fearful humans who block every move towards an enlightened society is very wearisome for many of us. And yet I will let my life run its course.

We are immortal spirits in mortal, animal bodies. I am very aware that my body has an awareness of its own and would like nothing more than to feed, fight, and fuck all the livelong day. The body and the ego associated with it would like to live forever if it could. When my awareness is centered there I experience fear.

In my life I have come close enough to see the grim reaper take a swing at me a couple of times. I have seen the flash of his blade. On one such occasion I had just driven over a hill on a two-lane highway doing about 70mph to see a truck parked just off the side of the road and a dog walking from the truck bed across the highway into my lane. There was no time to save both the dogs life and mine. He impacted under my left front wheel on the rain slick road and went under the tire which sent me into an uncontrollable 360 degree spin. I remember taking my hands off the wheel and knowing this could be it, feeling a beautiful sense of peace and timelessness. Unfortunately, the dog died and I lived without injury to me or my car.

Over the course of my life I have learned to center my awareness in spirit. When I am centered there I am in the eye of the storm and the rotating winds encircle my spirit but can never disturb the peace that prevails there.

So I do not view life as good or death as bad. They simply are.

i agree Jellric, it's all about where one's awareness is centered.

i don't see life and death as either good or bad really.  that was more in reference to our genetic coding.  our instinct equates death with Bad,
the worst outcome possible, everything should be done to prevent it, otherwise animals would just wander around getting eaten by the bigger animals without trying to run or put up a fight.
imagine if animals were that zen.  "oh well" says the gazelle just standing there staring at the lion who is about to pounce on it - "i guess it's just my time."

it seems to me the process of dying would be the ultimate trip (provided that you weren't killed instantly in an accident or something). the so-called "ego death" trips one can have on LSD and shrooms are like a primer for the real thing.  your ego would be terrified and you might want to do anything possible to hang on when "going with the flow" is really your only option.  i can say that i'm not totally
afraid of death but i bet that when confronted with my own unstoppable and imminent demise it would be pretty damn scary at first until i was able to just let go.

i think i'll find a copy of the tibetan book of the dead...

I have downloaded a video, 'Beyond Life with Timothy Leary'. It is him speaking about his own final trip (before dying from cancer) from the Tripmaster himself. Pretty insightful. I agree that tripping probably can be valuable practice for the real thing. "Die before you die." has been said by many spiritual teachers.

I have read several accounts of NDE's where the patient perceives himself as out of the body witnessing the doctors frantic attempts to "save" him. Many of them mention being profoundly dissapointed and annoyed at being forcibly brought back into their bodies. They often yell at the offending doctor. That would really suck!

IMPO, Life and Death = Neutral.

There is no good and bad in this case, both can not be judged by living standards.

No point in giving up your power while waiting for someone else to change or go away, though.  Tune him out in the meantime.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread topic!  Sorry, Gomp.
