Q about soaking grains

i have a problem...i started soaking my popcorn this morning at 7am. i planned on using tomorrow to pc all my jars b/c my pressure cooker only can fit one quart jar at a time, but my manager called me in to work at 11am tomorrow...
my question is, my tek says to soak for 24 hours....can i cut it to like 18 hrs and still be successfull? and how long can i let my grains sit after straining before i pc the jars...will the popcorn be ok in the jars for 8 hours without being pc'd?
thanx

I would say eitherway is fine. Soak 18 hours and then p.c or drain with a paper towel over then while at work. WB

Next time try simmering. I simmer all my WBS for 30 minutes. I have probably had 80 jars colonized this way. Works great.

18 is ok.
24 is better.
drain them and resoak for a few hours before loading into jars.
if you want to do it in 18, start them in hot water for the soak. when the water cools, strain it and readd hot water.
the heat helps promote germination and helps in hydrating the grains.

Same here, I simmer and that's it...see no real reason to waste time/energy soaking grains, or at least WBS. Rye can be a different story.

Well, I'm sure it wasn't for nothing--the goal is to find what works best for you. What works best for me is a 30-40 minute simmer, then immediately loaded into jars and pressure cooked. Try WBS just simmering though, you might be surprised at how well it works (or you'll curse me out).

would u reccommend a simmer for popcorn...we're at 11 hours and the popcorn is noticably soft... could i simmer the popcorn for 1/2 hr right now and start my pcing? this would be great, but i dont want to compromise my spore syringes....and while im at it...
ive never used spore syringes before, i just used a poor mans lc...do i have to use all my spores in one inoculation? or are they keepable for several times for nocing up jars...sorry im such a newb. -=]

No idea what to tell ya there, as I've never used popcorn. You don't have to use all the spores in one inoculation, they can be stored after several uses.

that depends on how many jars. if youre just doing a few, you can use only part of your syringe, but i say use it all. its more likely to bring contams if saved, and if you are successful, you'll have more than enough spores in the near future.
HEY HOLYDIVER, you said you simmer and then put the grains IMMEDIATELY into jars for PCing, do you not drain the water out in a colander for 30min before you load your jars?

They get a 10 minute drain, while stirring several times to let the excess moisture escape. Sorry, I shouldn't have used the word "immediately", as that's not what it is.

I ran out of room in my pc and ended up leaving a WBS jar that I soaked out. It's been sitting here probally over 20 days now never PC'd and it still hasn't grew anything. The seed on top has dried out and turned white. That might be some kind of growth but its very slow if it is. Would this suggest that Wbs isn't the contam hazard once thought? I'm definitly going to try this now. I guess it goes to show you once again nothing is written in stone. Holydriver how long have you been doing the no soak simmer tek sucessfully?

i have yet to get a single contam on any of the grains ive done, it seems like everything we do to prepare jars/casings is just to insure success. all the lysol, alcohol, H2O2, gloves, masks, and flow hoods are the creation of the way americans tend to go about things. even in gardening, the "professionals" (stamets in this case) say that you need sterile this and that... for gardening... its just bullshit. its a way of making sure that the only strains that survive can only do so in laboratory settings. then the ice aged comes and were all fucked and sober. and apparently very bored...

Here's what I do to cut down on soak time.
Every 4 hours I run the jars through with the hottest water from the tap. I have my water tank set at it's highest so it's sort of like a pre-simmer?, I don't know but it seems to work. I let the water flow continuously through the jar for like 2 or 3 min per jar, the pressure of the water should really be stirring things up in the process.
I usually PC after 4 runs, or roughly 16 hrs, and it has not failed me yet...good luck man...
