what's your prognosis for the failure?
I think your exactly right afoaf, I cut too far down on the Opuntia, and they shrunk. Next time I plan to either cut closer to the top near the growth shoot, or use a new side growth shoot(pup) to graft on.

Here are the new pictures of the Myrtillocactus areole graft as promised:
Sorry for the picture quality, I have no macro option so I tried to get as close to the little seedling as possible. I think the camera lense was only a few centimeters away from the graft lol.

The little graft has grown another little areole. I destroyed the main growth shoot, so that all the growth would be directed to the Loph scion. So I'll keep you all updated on how that goes.

Looks great... Mine (on pere) has seemed to firmlly secure itself, though the top of the pereskiopsis that isn't covered by the seed has turned dark. It's hard, doesn't look like any kind of rot. Not sure. It's been almost 2 weeks now and no signs of growth though. Theres something popping up on top of the tallest leaf. I can't tell if it's another leaf or some stalk trying to grow, should I stop it?

Nice work. It looks precariously balanced on the side, but the graft has obviously taken. Did you do anything special to hold the seedling in place during the first week, or did it just stick to the sap of the Myrtillocactus?

Elgr - do you mean the seedling is dark? If it is a new shoot you should let it grow a few inches so you have more grafting stock, but you could also just remove it. It's all up to you.
Koppie - I just used the sap of the Myrtillocactus to hold it onto place. I don't think it will fall off the side, it has a pretty secure bond, but this may become a problem when it grows bigger. I plan to regraft by that time anyway.
The little guy is still doing good, I hope that by destroying the main growth shoot it will speed up the growth of the Lophophora. Kinda like when you cut the top off a pedro it diverts growth to a new pup, and in this case the Loph. will be the pup.

Yeah, well I've got plenty of stock left. I think I'll just cut it off. It's too early in the scion's life to take any chances. It hasn't shown any signs of growth at all.
No, the seedling isn't dark, the surface of the pereskiopsis that was not covered by the scion is dark.

With the opuntia I wouldn't graft to a pad like done above. But i would plant a pad sideways and graft onto the smaller circular youg pad that emerges.

elgr - I don't know what the black could be, possibly a fungal infection.
SHEIK - Thats probably what I'm going to do next time I try opuntia grafting. The new shoots on these Opuntia are very round when they first pop out, so I think they would work excelent.
Oh, and I had the name of the Opuntia wrong, its actually Opuntia Vulgaris not O. Compressa.

I thought I would ask this question, didn't feel like starting a new thread.
You know how they say you should add limestone to lophophora soil, I am wondering if you could use baking soda instead. Both are basic and nontoxic (to humans at least) you would probably use a lot less baking soda though.
What do you think?

adjust - I'm not sure if that would work, I've never tried it. I'm sure someone can help you out, but there are much more knowledgable people here that can answer your question. I'm certainly no expert , at least compared to many of the peyote growers I've seen here on the shroomery.

I've already destroyed the main grow tip, should I cut off every areole so that the Myrtillocactus does not pup? Thus diverting energy from the scion to a new pup? Any comments or suggestions from you cactus pros out there would be greatly appreciated .

Thanks for the tip (I have no idea about your current question, though). Two kilograms of lime was only 5 bucks, so I went for the lime. Lime contains other useful nutrients too, I guess.

Here are some update pics, they are growing kinda slowly(at least I think so), but they are growing I can tell from another new areole starting to grow yesterday. Usually grows an areole per week, sometimes more, sometimes less.
Here are the pics:
Seems to be growing outward instead of wider. I cut off all the areoles/spines of the Myrtillocactus just to stop future shoots from growing, it's just an expiriment after all. The base is red but the new growth is green and looks/feels healthy.

i think the soda idea would flash the ph very quickly and not do much for perminent adjustments. i know certain grades of lime are supposed to do that. i know stone grade lime breaks down very very slowly and can adjust ph for a very long time, where powder dolomite might have to be replaced in a years time or less. beautiful grafting and good work jb.

I'm actually suprised this graft survived. I expected it to die the most out of all the grafts i've done. This the only seedling graft that has worked for me.
