Would this speed up colonization? Experts needed!!

I was just wondering, A half pint jar will take say 2weeks to colonize fully right? and many people have been dieing to find ways to speed up colonization, why can't you cut your substrate to be colonized in half? I'm not greatly expierenced with mush cultivation, but it seems like this will be a logical idea. Given, that the yield will not be as plentiful as a full half pint. I guess, that if a half-pint produces a 100%, then a half of a half-pint will produce between 50%-75%. Just seems logical. Also, if the colonization period of a half pint is two weeks, then a half of a half-pint will take approx. a week, correct thinking at least? And also an idea I will tinker with is using a very shallow rubbermaid pan or bowl, and adding a teaspoon of verm sprinkled on the bottom of the bowl/pan, so as to prevent water droplets forming, followed by a layer of BRF/Popcorn/etc.. substate mixed with a teaspoon of verm (for water content correction) about a half inch deep. So all together, i'd have only 1/4th of an inch deep substrate spread out over a say 1ftx1ft floor. In my thought, I think the myc would move faster across a shallow plain, rather than a dense, semi deep jar. Seems like more air flow would be allowed between the grain's, and it'd just run right across the substrate. If you used a half-pint worth of substrate in each 1ft by 1ft box, at a half inch deep, does anyone else think that colonization would happen faster on this than in a jar? Also, implying that the box is sealed by a top just like the jar. So I have two ?'s, One will half the substrate mean half the colonization time? and would a flat thin surface of substrate colonize faster than a denser, deeper jar? Tell me watcha think!!!

good idea, but mycelium grows exponentially at first then it eventually slows to grow at best case t^3. I wouldn't bother trying your idea. If you can't wait that extra week, you are a newbie and your impatience will end up with you having nothing. I can't stress this enough, patience is a virtue. If you are really determined to cut down on colonization time, you will need to upgrade your technique to something past PF tek. If you use liquid innoc and distribute it well, 7 days for a quart of grain is reasonable.

As for your other question, certainly gas exchange is highly useful, but 2 points to remember. 1) too much air will dry out the substrate and hinder mycelium growth. 2) half-pint is already a pretty small substrate mass. Getting adequate gas exchange is all that is needed, more won't help and can hurt. PF Tek is designed to give enough gas exchange. As always though, Thanks for contributing ideas and feel free to try an experiment. Happy growing.

Will half the substrate mean half the colonization time?

Yes, if your only colonizing half the substrate then yes, it will take half the time.

Would a flat thin surface of substrate colonize faster than a denser, deeper jar?

I dont think so, sounds like a big risk to contams to me, but I guess its worth a shot.

Like he said, best way to speed up initial colonization is LC.

As far as half inch substrates go, you have to remember you are working with a living mass here. Spread it too thin and you will hurt it's ability to fruit. Think of it like growing a tree in a shallow box of dirt. Those roots need somewhere to go...
Okay a shroom is not like a tree, but it is generally accepted that shroom size has a direct correlation to substrate depth...

You would be far better off just making a regular jar, then doing a G2G transfer...sure you have to make the initial investment of time, but you save a lot in the long run...

Read TMC if you haven't already - it will get you a long way towards understanding how the mushroom works. Do not attempt to turn it into a lab rat, it's still that sacred fungus of the Aborigines

I know what strikes me as odd about this. It is totally unnatural. The whole idea is just totally backwards.

So are historians going to look back at 'The Great Cake Eaters'? Damn. That was a backwards step in the evolutionary process. We left Shroomheads in the dust. Welcome to the new age of Vermheads.

for the record, i do have full jars colonizing, but i am expierementing with a smaller substrate, maybe i'll get to trip a week ahead of schedule? if not, in another week the jars will be ready, no biggy. But if i can get half of what the regular yield is, in half the time, wats the harm? And for the impatiece part, half the sub will still produce mushrooms, only half tho, but it will produce right? All i'm getting in a lil icing before my cake's get through....
And snake: Then add a lil more verm on the bottom layer of the box for the roots to go through, would this be sufficent enough depth?

Thanx for replies btw

definately don't add more verm.  Colonizing this verm will end up using even more energy for an already thin mycelium.  It might still fruit, but it is wasted energy.  Furthermore, it would take more time to colonize the verm.  Good luck  and happy shrooming
