Beginners Cultivation Forum
    #4876843 -

If there is a lower level cultivation forum beneath this, I don't think any of the experienced growers would have a reason to go to it.

Most people would just stay in this forum, in large part because it'd be difficult to differentiate between a beginner's question or an intermediate question. Then you'd have the creation of people getting pissed at beginners who think they're intermediate and aren't. I mean, there's a pretty clear division of knowledge between the advanced and intermediate cultivation forums, but there would be barely any between the intermediate and the beginning (at least that you could enforce, if that would even be a priority). And there would be no reason for a beginner to stay in that forum once they learned more and were able to move up, so there would be no one to answer their questions; which would invariably cause them to ask in the intermediate forum because no one would respond to them in the beginners, making the new forum irrelevant.

If you have to do a test run to prove me right, so be it. But don't count on the good will of the Shroomerites to hang out and answer beginners questions out of the goodness of their hearts. At least not for more than a couple weeks, anyway.

And when their questions don't get answered, they'll research it.

If not, they will just post in intermediate and the threads will automatically be locked...I don't see a problem?

You don't think there would be a problem with the differentiation of beginner and intermediate questions?

You tell me how you would judge which threads to be locked, unless a specific criteria is outlined at the forum stating what you can and cannot ask...

If the answer may be found in the FAQ, it's beginner. (and/or searching etc)

BUT, how do they know what forum to post it in? Well make limitations like the market place.

If the criteria is whether or not the information is present in the FAQ, then you should just change this forum to beginner and not have one in the middle, as most questioned posted here can be found in the FAQ (in one form or another).

But it's not like there is nearly enough discussion on an intermediate level here to justify having another forum. Most people asking questions have read and researched, they are just confused and don't want to mess up. A little while ago someone was really worried because all they could find was pint jars and the tek only talked about half pints. He had no idea what to do, and nowhere is that specific answer written.

It's good to have a mingling of skills because that's how people learn. If you segregate them to their own forum it's going to be discouraging more than anything, and it's not going to help them (which is what I thought this was supposed to be about).

I am not against the new users, hell I'm still considered a new user by when my account was created, and I do agree that this is a community based around helping others learn and being positive with one another. I am also not against questions which are highly debated, as that usually spurs the most responses and people get involved and post really intelligent thoughts on the particular subject. What I am against though is ANY user asking a redundant question which are clearly answered in the FAQs, which was created by the vets and others who spent their own time creating the FAQs, which took MUCH MUCH more time to create than it would to search for the answer.

I would agree, but honestly, how often does that occur? And 95% of the time everyone just ignores the post and it goes away. I would say the majority of the posts here are honest questions, and despite the fact it may be in the FAQ, there is also a lot of contradictory or confusing information in there.

I really don't like the thought of someone having to have a certain level of knowledge to ask a question...that's not how it's supposed to work.

For the sake of sanity, this has been discussed in this forum already, there's a stickied poll pertaining to this, and finally there is an open thread discussing the matter in the WA&F forum. Do we really need another gigantic thread on the topic? I don't think so.

Well I think the poll is going to bulldoze the users that obviously don't have a say in this, and just because people already talked about it doesn't mean others can't talk about it as well. I never saw the other post, and I doubt the other people responding to his did either.

So I think we should be able to at least discuss it...

EDIT: I will admit, however, I did not check the Website Announcements forum before I started this thread. Whoops.

>>>>>>It's good to have a mingling of skills because that's how people learn.<<<<<<<

In a way yes. But, not always.

First off - fresh newbies have little or no skills to contribute. So where exactly is the mingling?

How many kindergarten kids sit in an 8th grade class room & contribute?

How many 5th graders set in a high school class & contribute?

How many 7th graders set in a senior college class & contribute.

Sure, a very RARE few do. But - not often.

How many kindergarten kids join in contact pro sport try-outs - with adults?

How many kindergarten kids drive in the INDY 500, with qualified drivers?

How many kindergarten kids pilot space shuttles?

NONE........ZERO.........

Many many times newbie questions arise that are posed like this:

Okay, I made my casing mix (h/poo/straw/verm), what next?

THAT IS NOT A CASING MIX. It is a SUBSTRATE MIX.

I could go ON & ON with examples of those type questions.

Isn't it time the newbies learn the language, before they start talking.

This is meant to be constructive & I believe a division, so that the cultivation forums - can be - WILL.

MycoCat is right again.

People can avoid 'newbie' threads just as easily as they can avoid going to a Beginner's Forum. The downside to the Beginner's Forums is, just as MycoCat stated, none of the more experienced and knowledgable members would have any need to go there. Urgent posts made by new members would take a very long time to be answered, if answered at all by anyone knowing better than them.

I'm all for helping crawlers to walk, and walkers to run. Dividing the Shroomery even more would hinder alot of the information stream. Not to mention, it seems a bit elitist.

Do you really feel that brand new cultivators to the scene have much of a voice in what goes on in a situation like this? This is a choice to be made by the people, but it certainly isn't going to be made by the lower echelons of this forum. In other words, the people that don't have a say in this are being bulldozed over.

I see what you are saying and agree. Mostly in advanced cult, they don't even talk about advanced cultivation techniques. That forum should be called experimental and hypothetical cultivation and organic chemistry. I think that a pf tek forum would be useful. Just so we can separate the thirty per day OMFG ITS BEEN NINE HOURS IN THE FC AND NOTHING DID I FUCK UP??? Threads from the more serious casing and bulk conversations. Hopefully If all the pf tek questions are in one place newbs could easily review another persons Q&A

Ah, Magash. It's been awhile. I read it on the sticky poll and wished I had quoted it originally...this is indeed a beginners forum.

While I appreciate what amounts to simply the annoyance of what HolyDiver believes are the "upper echelons" of this community, I see another forum serving no other purpose than to relieve those people of having to scroll through an extra page of posts in order to sort through the bullshit.

As I see it now, what exactly do you think will compose the intermediate forum? The odd humidifier discussion, some bulk grow techniques and then...silence. There is not enough content specifically beyond what you would call "beginner" to justify another forum. And I would have to say, the Shroomery community is mostly composed of those in the beginner class, as Magash has pointed out with his observation of the forum as it is, was, and will most likely continue to be.

Wow this thread is going in a bad direction!!! Everyone remember no matter how or in which forums were helping each other out, that is what we are here for.

I think a few people are right in this thread...in a beginners forum, its going to be hard to find a experienced person to hang around and answer the monotonus (sp) and repetative questions that till be asked, I believe it will just be a bunch of noobs, hanging around amongst themselves trying to answer each others questions.....as we all know rumors and mis-information spread quickly even in this forum, it would spread like wild fire in one like that, we would have noobs coming from that forum into this one, saying how they just made a casing layer out of cement and playdough, as they were advised by other noobs to do in there new forum  .....Someone said they will be forced to read the FAQ's because there Q's wont get answered....I believe they will just come here and say "noone could answer me there..help me here"....

I'm still sticking to my original, although far-fetched and not really serious, idea of somehow incoporating a program into the shroomery where eather 1. Members are not allowed to post unless they spent a certain minimum amount of time browsing the FAQ's, or 2. maybe have something search there post before its acaully posted to the forum, and redirect them to the proper FAQ's or already posted things, similar to a search in the search posts area.
I know both of those ideas probably are impossible, im no computer wiz at all....just things I always think about when seeing the same questions in this forum over and over.....Iv been here for a few years with a few different member names, and I've seen agar alone answer the same questions at LEAST 50 times....poor guy!!!

Ok, you are all acting like this forum is flooded with completely retarded questions. Stop being drama queens, because the situation is not that bad. Yes, there are some questions that are stupid and could be answered by simple research. But nowhere near the number you all are acting like it is.

If you do not think a question is worth answering, simply don't answer it. That will probably motivate that person into doing the necessary research. But for most of those, who are genuinely confused and don't know the answer (which, if you've ever actually read the Shroomery FAQ or archives, is an easily achievable state) the forum is the only place they can get a practical explanation. And you want to banish them to a forum where no one is going to go, help them, or answer questions.

And don't think I'm coming from that perspective either, I've done as much research and reading as anybody here. I believe I've utilized this site to its fullest potential. But does that mean I turn around and refuse to help those who didn't have either the intelligence or stamina to read for hours and hours? No. Everyone cannot do that, and everyone should not be made to. This whole conversation fucking disgusts me, it boils down to a certain number of people being inconvenienced by those less knowledgeable, which is probably 90% of the people who utilize this site.

HaHa I didn't even think of that....maybe a quick 10 or 20 question test, with all the most common and basic questions on it, and if they get them wrong, they are told where to find the answer. that will also satisfy your point of view psycho, because they will be helped, just not givin the answer though.

I also see your point of view, that noobs will be noobs nomatter what, and we were all them at one point. One thing though, if you think about it, (this only my opinion) is that if they are "lazy" enough to not look in the forums, then they shouldnt be growing anyways, in sorts. I agree some questions that are repeated, are ones that cant really be prevented and will always happen nomatter what, and people need to be around to help them. But there are also alot of them, im guessing the ones that m-cat is talking about, are very very simple ones that should have been known already. I believe people wont learn or remember as much if they are just givin the answer. And by searching the faq's and MORE IMPORTANTLY the POSTS, they will come across even more information....

Re: Beginners Cultivation Forum [Re: MycoCat]

First off, I do believe the quiz is a feasible way to solve this problem. I would suggest that the quiz be made up of a great number of questions, with only a certain number asked each time (having 50 questions but asking a random combination of 25 of them, thus avoiding the answers all being static and subject to cheating). It would also be a great motivator for those less experienced to do the research necessary, while giving them realistic parameters to adhere to.

I would also like to comment that the decision is being made about this forum split before a consensus on the specifics of what actually constitutes a beginner has been defined. If the moderators themselves are disagreeing, that is a good indication that even those highly experienced cannot agree on the definition of a beginner (as Magash was saying). I do appreciate the annoyance that some people may have, but I just don't see this as being a practical or realistic solution to the problem.

leave the forums the way they are now...

if "experienced" researchers get annoyed, do one of 3 things...

refrain from participating in the thread... the thread dies quickly and disappears

use your "vast skills",  do the search and post the thread or tek...

answer the question off the top of your head... hey, you know this shit already, this should be no problem for you... ( you know who you are...)  :smirk:

whats the big deal?  i would bet a number of you asked "silly/annoying" questions under different handles before you finally developed skillzzz...

I also agree, maybe just make it a one time thing, once you pass, you have access to the forum you passed the quiz for...

I once had to do this, for a saltwater aquarium 101 site I was looking at, in order for me to post in there forums, I had to answer a set of questions about the general things about the nature of saltwater tank basics.

Also we know the question has been asked a thousand times believe me I know but the person asking doesn't. (Yeah yeah yeah I know some do it on purpose but most don't, anybody here gonna admit to doing it? ok then)

Next read the name of the fucking thread is it really that fucking hard to skip these questions when we want to.

If I didn't answer questions that I thought were noob questions there would be no reason to moderate other then to baby sit.

I would agree that the quiz be a one time thing for access to the forum. I mean, if you were forced to research for the quiz, even if you didn't remember the specific answer, you would remember being asked the question and where to go to find it. This would seem to satisfy most every complaint that has been stated here.

Magash also makes a good point, the newbies don't know this question has been asked a million times. But the simple fact the same questions are consistently asked seems to point to a problem on the Shroomery side of things, rather than the majority of those posting here. We all know the information could be better organized and consolidated, and that there is more useful information in the forums themselves that should be replacing the outdated guides that are there now (or at least I feel that way).

I don't think there should be a beginner forum anymore. Just a beginners quiz . Usually I'm hard headed, but you have all made good points and i feel that things are good the way they are.

This is meant to be constructive & I believe a division, so that the cultivation forums - can be - WILL.

Re: Beginners Cultivation Forum [Re: MycoCat]

MycoCat if you read the thread in WA&F you will notice that there are around 20 different, good suggestions for making this forum run smoother, and I think that this thread once again proves that things are NOT running smoothly.

Only ONE of these 20, is to split the forum. There are suggestions from the original thread which run the gambit from rewriting the FAQ's to making a video FAQ's to doing nothing at all. You should read it, and I don't blame you for not having read it. It should have stayed in the cult forum from the beginning.

Splitting the forum IMO has only gotten the most attention from the general readership because it is the best idea.

I am really starting to get sick of this mentality that by creating another forum that is more advanced than this one, that no one would help those in this forum anymore.

With that logic you are saying that the only reason anyone else helps the newer members with a question is here is because they are forced to by the fact that those questions are in there face all the time?

People are saying, - "if you don't like noob questions than simply ignore them", and then in the same breath they are saying, - "if a new forum were created it wouldn't be fair, because then everyone would ignore the noob questions." Well do we have a choice or not?

If there were another forum then someone would be forced to bone up in order to be taken seriously by the next level. Just the same way that I cannot hold my own in advanced mycology right now.

So if the beginners forum was nothing but 300 posts in a row about what shrooms will fuck me them up the fastest, so be it. At least when I have a question about agar I am not bumped in 30 seconds two page 2 because of them.

You wanna call that elitist, go right ahead.

learn to use the quick reply correctly, that is you're first step!

Then id run the idea by a mush cult moderator, and he will discuss it with the others, and they will come to a conclusion. Id help come up with questions.

I think if there is a quiz, you should be made to type in your answer and not have a multiple choice. That would keep people from just going through and guessing then coming back and just try the next.

Re: Beginners Cultivation Forum [Re: Magash]
    #4877643 -

This is what I just posted in Website Announcements. If you think there is a better solution than this, please enlighten me:

Instead of splitting the forums, we instead institute a one-time required quiz for posting. All forums could still be viewed, but a user could not post (at least in cultivation) until they exhibited the minimum required knowledge to do so. I would suggest the quiz be made up of a greater number of total questions with a smaller, random number to be asked. Something like 50 total questions, but 25 of those are randomly selected to avoid cheating or success through trial and error.

I believe this compromise should satisfy everyone that is tired of the repetitive nature of the cultivation posts or of the sometimes obvious apathy new users have towards doing their own research.

Please discuss.

But, since 45% of the questions are something on the order of,

Okay, I got a bag of shit, what next?

Which shrooms should I grow to f**k me up the best?

How can I grow 50 lbs - QUICK?

How the hell are you going to teach them, those are stupid questions?

And if not for the community, do it for Magash. His days and nights will be spent moving thread after thread so you folk won't have to be inconvenienced by the mere sight of them.

Dude, you need to calm down. In this thread you have accused others of being a drama queen, and then you say this?

I hardly think that poor magash is going to collapse at his computer, starving because his "days and nights" are taken up by moving threads.

Banished? Banished to the beginners forum? Harsh wording IMO. The concept of a three tiered system with HELL on the bottom is hardly what is being discussed.

You also said -

"I would also like to comment that the decision is being made about this forum split before a consensus on the specifics of what actually constitutes a beginner has been defined."

NOTHING has been defined, because NOTHING has been decided, at this point it is nothing more than a DISCUSSION from those who CARE about the shroomery, on DIFFERENT things that could be instituted to make things run smoother.

Take your own advice bud.

If this subject is making you "sick and disgusted" ...your words not mine, then simply "ignore it"... like you are telling others to do about the things that bother them. It's a bit hypocritical to give advice and then not follow it..

I would like some recent examples of all these retarded threads people keep mentioning.

Yes, they do happen, but not nearly at the frequency you're trying to make it seem like. I'd say for the sheer number of people who visit and access this site, the number of idiots is surprisingly low.

And, as much as you keep talking about it, no one has offered a practical solution yet except me. No one will even venture a guess as to what specific criteria would govern the different forums, though I've brought it up numerous times. You can't ignore that forever.

Ill assume that you will assume the responsibility of grading the dozens of quizes a week? It would have to be a simple multiple choice test. Just a test that will make people answer there own question. Just easy questions like...

What is the optimal temperature for pf jar incubation?
A. 100-150 degrees
B 40-50 degrees
C 80-86 degrees

What is the optimal RH for pf cakes?
A. 100
B. 30
C. 70

What is the fruiting temperature range for cubensis?
A. 74-78
B. 90-100
C. 30-50

How often should I fan a fruiting chamber?
A. 3-5 times a day
B. 1 time a day
C. never

What is a way to raise the humidity in a fruiting chamber?
A. moist perlite in the bottom
B. Misting.
C. By building a poor mans pod.
D. all of the above

Jarrod, you have also asked some newbie-ish questions.

I am not denying it one bit. But I've since utilized my resources and haven't posted needing help in the cult forum since about 3 days after I registered. 50%+ of the noob questions in here are from people who asked either the same, or same type (info found everywhere on the site) more then once.

Sorry I'm saying "fuck helping out anymore" but shit people, I've learned everything I need to grow sucessfully in probably 10 diff ways by reading. And then reading some more. Oh, and more reading.

I have written a tek I keep in a mycology folder on my desktop that I follow. It is composed of recipes, processes, growth parameters, supplies I need, both tools and things needing replenished.

I've done this all after reading. I don't see what the fuck the problem is that some people CAN'T FUCKING READ.

I'm a highschool dropout. I've got my GED. I didn't pay one dam bit of attention in school, but I got my GED because I sat down with the textbooks provided to me and READ.

Obviously this is not an option for other people. Maybe it is, and they just choose not to. Either way, I'm done. Call it fucked up, call me selfish for learning what I needed and not passing it on.

Read my ratings. 5 shrooms all over the place for good advice and being knowledgable. If 800+ posts of advice isn't sharing what I know, (or at least enough for you) then feel free to take over.

I've tried really hard to give the best advice I can. Shortlived my presence in the cultivation forum, but I can't do it anymore.

Thanks to all of those who have taught me what I know
(Mostly: Agar, Hippiechick, FooManShroom, and anyone else I may have forgotten)

To those I have taught in return, goodluck.

To noobs who can't fucking read, fuck you.

And to those who think bad of me for leaving because of this ^^^

Fuck you too.

Once again thanks to those who have taught me and goodbye.

Jarrod~

Well I was attempting to use a bit of hyperbole with that Magash statement, but I would admit I get slightly pissed about this. If you honestly think that a beginners forum would be helpful to beginners as you're pitching it now, you're on crack. No one is going to help them, because if they're out of sight, they're out of mind.

However, by actively trying to teach those beginners something (like maybe making them pass a quiz proving a minimum level of knowledge) we manage to actual fix the problem rather than ignore it.

So if you think I'm being a drama queen, that's fine, but I'd like to hear some constructive arguments from your side other than bitching about having to see stupid post titles.

Jarrod, you got some righteous indignation there buddy.

You think most everyone arguing about this isn't doing from the same perspective? All of us have tried to help out the community as much as we could, but to say fuck everyone because you feel put upon by having to see sub-par questions is not a good reason to leave.

Some people are stupid, and ask stupid questions. Others are confused, and ask stupid questions. Others are smart, and ask stupid questions. But it isn't any of our places to start judging people based on their knowledge. You have no way of knowing if a person has read the FAQ 1 or 100 times. They might just have trouble understanding it. What I don't get is the automatic assumption that everyone is this lazy piece of shit who didn't feel like doing any work.

And I think it's funny, I have the same grow guide on my computer, compiled from trial and error through the years. But I just don't agree with you on this.
