Martha closet humidity and airflow
    #4859739 - 10/27/05 03:08 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I closed up the bottom of my Martha closet with some clear sheeting, that seemed to bring the humidity from 67% to now "HI" which is 90% or higher and temp at 74deg. I built a splitter on-top of my humidifier and now have 2 hoses that enter at the top of the closet one stays on-top and the other is down in the middle. I change the timer from 4 times a day for 20 mins to 2 times a day for 20 mins and I think this may bring the humidity down a little, I'm doing casings by the way they are on there second flush right now. Does this sound good to you, now airflow i think is at minimal does there need to be a lot should i fan it once a week or more any suggestions on how to get more airflow if needed?

your cool-mist humidifier should be enough air-flow.

put three or four 2x2inch in the bottom of your martha and just leave your coolmist on all day long. this will:
-provide constant airflow
-push CO2 out of the bottom, so less fanning
-maintain constant hmidity (about 95%) which is fine for casings, though i guess 85-90% is ideal, ive never had problems at 95%.

So at the bottom hmmm just 2 or 3 holes. I def don't think keeping my humidifier on all day is a good idea but still I'm not sure kinda new to this. I'm saying by just having the humidifier on 4 times a day for 20 min already gave me a hi humidity somewhere between 90-100%.

with the holes i the bottom, the humid air will be pushed out with CO2. it will definatly be HI humidity, but nothing to harmful. if you are using a COOLMIST, you should be fine, they dont put out too much water.

thats why i asked, i had a feeling... youre using an ULTRASONIC, not a coolmist. ultrasonics put out a lot of fog, coolmist put out a lot of humid air. go get a coolmist.
if you look at my setup, you'll see i have that same ultra sonic, i only turn it one for like five minute after if been fucking with my casings and the humidity has dropped. DEFINATLY YOU DONT WANT THAT ON ALL THE TIME.

I went to the thrift store today and got this vick's cool mist for $5.

At the salvation army they didn't have any humidifiers. A lady at the counter heard me ask and said she had one in her car. She gave me this for free and it works just fine. It's a Holmes ultrasonic.

Why don't you want to leave your humidifier on all day? They're designed for that kind of operation, rather than the constant flickering on-off which tends to mess with (cheap) motors.

And your objective isn't just to have super-high humidity. The coolmist is preferred because of its air exchange potential--it's basically forcing fresh air from outside the unit into a chamber, humidifying it, and then pumping that into your Martha. As your plants grow, they'll expunge CO2 which will build up considerably. You want as much of that stale air & CO2 moving out of the Martha as possible.

The reason people use an ultrasonic as well is because the coolmist generally can't raise the humidity to 95% on its own. Depending on the ambient humidity in the air, you're probably looking at an increase of 40% or so from a single coolmist in the Martha. Without an ultrasonic, I would tend to get my humidity up to 80-90%, depending on how humid the air in the room was. So to make up the difference, people run ultrasonics with timers on them to give it that extra boost.

Go with the Vicks coolmist. Easy to implement, and just leave it running.

Ok, went to good will and to my amazement I found a cool mist with a fan I plan on blocking off the output on the cool mist and making a hose come out of it now should I have a splitter on the hose to I have two hoses or should I just have one and the hose should be placed at the top of my Martha closet so it pushes the air down correct?

Like this, I have one for the ultrasonic and one for the cool mist. Have the coolmist input below the ultrasonic input. That way the fog from the ultrasonic mixes with the flow from the coolmist.

pshawny, how often do you run your coolmist and your ultrasonic, I think from what Ive been told is to run the cool mist 24/7 and the ultrasonic only when you notice the humidity dropping so maybe once a day for a few mins.

The coolmist is on 24/7 and the ultrasonic is on a timer to come on every 2.5 hours for a few minutes.
