Modern Music

Another rant.
Modern Rock kinda pisses me off. Most pop/rock songs only use 4th 5th and 1st modes of a progression (Lydian, Mixolydian, and Ionian). And of each mode, they only use triads, making each chord pretty bland, having no flavor. This is also results in just simply 9 notes to choose from each key, what an arsenal. Power Chords result from all of this and those are just weak ass crap played as loud as possible with some fucking retard singer screaming over it. The only variable is the name of the girl friend in the song. And if you say you like politics in a band (maybe to compensate for their shit talent), it's a joke. And that is so because the punk enthusiasts who are so revolutionary won't do shit to change our current goverment, bush is still in office and fucking the country, stupid. It's asinine, do these people like to hear bands bitch about politics, yet not internalize any of it, much less take them fucking seriously.
And rap, oh geeze, what happened, wtf happened. First of all, there is no harmony and harmony is a fundamental of music. When I hear rap, it sounds so engineered. A computer puts out another fresh beat, slaps a rapper's name on it, and it's a chart topper. Maybe rap had some relevent stuff to say at first ( I didn't say the rappers exemplified any form of musicianship) but now its all booty lickin bitches.
What's so horrible about all this is it has been repeating itself since the 80's in pop music, and maybe even earliar. I hate when people say "I love music", when in fact they are attracted to synthetic yuppee material and nothing, in fact, musically, related. When people say they like music, I just don't know whether or not I would like to say I like it as well ( although I love music with all do sincerity). Most music in the charts nowadays has very few musical elements to them and so you basically don't have to think when you listen to it, just snap ur finger and nod your conformist head.

people who don't play any instruments and have no knowledge of music theory don't know that those pop chord progressions have been used in millions of songs before.
being a musician kinda makes music lose that mysterious magic that used to make you say "wow! how the hell do they do that/come up with that?"
the bottom line is theres no way anyone can create a decent sounding chord progression that has never been used before. its the rhythms and melodies that make a song unique.
dont get me wrong though. bland manufactured modern pop rock pisses me off too, especially when my non-musician friends think its so great. but i dont get too mad about it, they dont know any better.
I show them music I like, and they usually poo-poo it within the first minute of a song. people dont like music that you need to develop an attentive musical ear to enjoy...
until they smoke some herb of course

The harmony can be just as creative as the melody, and in good music, it is often more creative. 1,4,5's are the tip of the iceberg. There is Minor harmony progressions using lydian augmented and altered scales, there is diminished scale harmony, and the list goes on. With creative voicings, harmony has just as many possibilities as melody, except harmony is the statistically dense foundation.

You don't like the shit on the radio, don't listen to it. I know I don't.
Find something you like and listen to that. There's tons more music being made today than what's on the radio.

Hip-hop is about rhythm. The whole 'rap sucks because it doesn't have much melody' thing = pure bullshit.

a lot of rappers are using melody in their lyrics now, and some even sing their hooks (hook = chorus, for those not hip to the lingo)
I agree rap doesnt suck.
but everyone i know that listens to rap, and even a rapper i know, admits that most rap sucks.
