Let's start paying children to learn.
    #4866614 - 10/29/05 09:57 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

You know, I'm thinking that if we started spending 25% less on education and start just paying children to self-educate our education system would be the most amazing educational system in the world.

Most kids would finish high school by the time they were 14 consuming the same resources that they would have consumed by that time in the current system, while having only completed the 8th grade.

Does anybody know how much we spend in the U.S. per student per year? Seems like I remember hearing once that it was like $20,000.

If that's accurate, then .25 of 20,000 is $5,000/grade. Most curriculums consist of 5-6 classes. That comes out to $800-$1000 a class.

You offer a kid that much money, and most of them will learn algebra, or 6th grade english, or 8th grade science in a month or less.

We could start it out as kind of an experimental summer school where kids can get a head start on the next grade while getting paid for it in the summer.

Damn, I should run for President. :stoned:

You mean pay kids to cheat on all their tests? :smirk:

Look how much cheating goes on already in school, when there's NO hint of money to come for the good grades.

Start offering kids money to get an A....and they'll start getting A's all the time.

Of course getting an 'A' in a course doesn't mean you know shit about what you were supposed to learn.

There was a large problem of skipping school and dropping out at my high school so they implemented something like this. You had to be status indian (which I'm not unfortunately) and you got paid a certain amount every day with deductions for skipped classes.

It didn't seem to do much except give the kids booze money. I think it was about $150 a month if you attended all your classes.

Very true. Isn't there a statistic out there that about 70% of people are functionally innumerate by age 25?

They should just remove all the teachers and replace them with tape recorders, playing out their same old lecture over and over again.

Most teacher could be replaced with a computer, or a VCR & TV and some videocassettes. Maybe an 800 number for questions.

Do you think we should have a less-centralized school system? More home-schooling?

Think of all the money they would save.

And all the dumbass teachers that would now be jobless.

It's win-win.

It's a good idea but it gives them too much autonomy. What if they don't need the money, or don't want it?

Cool man. I'm all for more home-schooling. I plan to do so with my kids if/when I have any.

I'll probably send my kids to public schools, but I expect they will learn more from me than at school. The only reason I want to send them to school is for socialization and friend-making.

When I become a parent, I'm going to do the same thing my parents did. I remember it always being a treat going to the library once a week or my Dad bringing me a book he bought for me on the way home from work. If you teach children early that reading is fun, it will make it much easier to learn in the future.

My parents did the same thing - weekly trips to the library. They always let me pick out as many books as I wanted, even if there was no chance I could finish them all before they were due.

Sounds good on the surface, but no. Give kids money to learn and they make the association that learning is for money. Stop giving them money and they'll no longer care about learning, which would be a lot worse off in the long run. If someone enjoys doing something, rewarding them for doing that will make them get less and less actual satisfaction from it as they transfer the once-intrinsic motivation to the extrinsic reward, then let the intrinsic die away as it's no longer needed.

And before anyone tries to argue, I should point out that I took a single psych class last year so I'm like an indisputable expert or something.

you're right... that's why i think testing kids has become redundent
education systems today relay too much on the test (be it written or multiple choice) to determin how knowledgeble (SP?) someone is
but any "monkey" with enough memory cells can probably pass todays tests still does not mean they UNDERSTAND anything

kids are no longer taught at school... they're processed with a few nods on the way and off you go here's your diploma now if you want to get a normal education well guess what... YOU PERENTS SHOULD HAVE GIVEN YOU ONE... but you can at least pay loads of money for a FORMAL degree... yeah that might get you a job... GOOD LUCK!

*sigh*

true education takes time and effort from both sides and i belive can not be achived on a mass scale (schools and education systems)
if i'll ever get a choice in such a matter i'd rather send my child to be some sort of apprantice to some wise man (or maybe i'll be the wise man) and fuck school!

teachers are there to get paid... just like cops!
