In most cases yes. There is a lot of equipment in terms of incubating and preparing agar. I would think if done properly the success rate would be higher than the standard method.

All else equal (which cannot be as no two nutrient values, moisture content & surface consistency would be the same in various agar recipes, verses seed grains).

The variables would be what the culture was started with (spores, liquid culture (LC) or tissue). In my limited experience, with an LC inoculated into sterilized wbs/grain the colonization speed appears about equal to, and often faster than agar Petri's.
