THE PARTS: Some PP Deli containers (pint size & heavy duty as possible) (PP = polypropylene #5 in triangle on container bottom)
Micropore tape (can be had at most drug stores, in the bandage section)
Some coffee filters & rubber thick bands
A drill & ? inch (or slightly larger) bit (see pictures for container preparation)
THE INGREDIENTS:
Chunky Vermiculite
Ground up brown rice and/or wild bird seed, or both combined (about the size of sand) (think coffee grinder)
Weather aged & dry h/poo
THE MIX:
1/3 each
Toss it all in a bowl, add water until it will not absorb any more (field capacity).
Test water content by giving the mixture a gentle squeeze.
It should drip a few drops, when you do.
(warning - you do not want it like runny mud)
Gently add mix to Deli containers & DO NOT PACK IT DOWN.
(You want it as non-compacted & as fluffy as possible).
Place prepared lid on Deli container, BUT LEAVE about an inch unsnapped down. (the reason is so steam can escape there)
Add double coffee filters, held down with a rubber band.
MICROWAVING:
Place the loaded container in the center of your microwave & set the timer for 2 minutes.
Once done, repeat again for 2 minutes. (Note, microwave power varies. Mine is 1200 watts. For small watt microwaves - repeat a 3rd time)
Don?t open the microwave door & allow the Deli container to cool for several minutes.
Then reach in & grasp the container sides (near the bottom) & gently snap the top on tight - all around.
(Note, you might think about wearing gloves, as the container will be HOT).
DO NOT handle the container roughly, which can compact the content.
Allow container to cool overnight.
INOCULATION:
Spore or liquid culture syringe (liquid culture colonizes much faster) (spore syringes from vendors, or make your own liquid culture - another whole subject)
Remove coffee filter dust covers.
Simply insert syringe in 1 of the 2 tape covered holes, inject about ? cc down the center, then swivel the syringe needle & inject the same amount into 4 corners of the container.
Tape over the needle hole with another strip of Micropore tape.
Replace dust cover coffee filters.
INCUBATION
75 to 80F, in total darkness.
Colonization will begin to appear as white spots, then spread until the whole mass is white. (you can peek, but don?t handle them - much)
RESULTS:
Colonized spawn to super-spawn a large tray of pasteurized h/poo. (super spawn means using colonized substrate, as spawn into a larger substrate)
Or, birthed as a cake.
This works for me. Your results may vary (as your microwave, ingredients, container & mixture will vary)
EDIT to add; Same method works GREAT with pint glass wide mouth jars & Kerr/Ball plastic lids, with the lids rigged the same as above ( 2 holes & Micropore tape). You just leave the lid 1/2 or 3/4 turn loose - when you nuke them. Then, tighten when you remove them.

nice tek agar. if the micropore tape protects against contaminates, why the coffe filter? additional protection from dust?

The lid is left a crack open during microwaving (for steam to vent). The coffee filters cover that area. Otherwise, they are simple dust covers that add an extra protective sheild over the micropore tape filter area.

i think thats why its ground up, so the microwave is sufficent in sterilizing it.

the reason for PCing the bird seed is to kill any endospores. I'm thinkin you'd still wanna soak the bird seed prior to sterilizing it. I've read that by soaking it, the bacteria will germinate from the endospore state so it's easier to kill. Plus by soaking you'll have more moisture in the grain. Just my 2cents. Something to think about at least.

PF Tek doesn't presoak brown rice. No need here either. Ground brown rice and/or wbs gets hydrated - when you add water. Since it is ground up - it hydrates very quickly.
If you are nervous about it. Simply grind the brown rice / wbs & nuke it DRY - by itself for 2 minutes. Not so much it burns, or gets turned to toast. Then, follow the instructions.

This isn't really STERILIZATION. It's sort of a semi-sterilization - for lack of a better word.
Verm is by nature clean of microorganisms. Well weathered dry h/poo has great fiber & carries a high load of DEAD microbes & by grinding BRF/WBS you remove the insulating barrier that protects endospores - which allows microwave radiation, heat, & mild steam to kill them.
This is no SURE fire method. It takes finding PP containers that will take it & a little practice, until you get your method - down pat.
BTW, you can use the same method - WITH PINT WIDE-MOUTH GLASS JARS & PLASTIC (KERR/BALL) LIDS. Just rig the lid the same way as this (2 holes - covered with micropore tape) & leave the LID..... 3/4 turn loose - when you NUKE the jar.

Agar--can you explain the reason short times of microwaving "sterilize" things close to the certainty of PC'ing? For the layman, btw.
Thanks.

it is nowhere near the certainty of PCing, read the post before yours.
Agar- how many time have you done this with WBS? Have you actually done it with WBS and grown using multispore?
I have cow poo colonising now which was not heated at all, just treated with lime. To be honest if some beginner had posted what you did I would have been telling them there is no way in hell that 4-6minutes is enough for WBS ground or not. I had one small jar of grain I microwaved for maybe 40minutes, I added lots of LC to it and it colonised rapidly, later I saw green starting but it was overcome with myc. That is why I question the use of multipore for this. I have nuked bleached commercial wheat flour for 60mins and it contammed, (left as a control jar, un-inoculated)
Have you had success with just verm + manure? I have a jar of verm and manure that I microwaved until bone dry for about 60minutes. I plan on adding back all the moisture as LC.
I have yet to write my own microwave guidelines. I will say that the best grain I have worked with is RGS since it does not explode or have much starch.
I have cow poo and straw that was pastuerised in the microwave which started pinning a few days ago (against my will...)
A warning on verm is that it can reach extremely high temperatures in the microwave and could easily melt plastic containers. I have melted PP no.5 containers that were specifically sold as microwaveable.

BLACKOUT - NO WHOLE GRAINS ARE INVOLVED.
Ground up WBS and/or brown rice combo. Certainly not whole grains. Whole grains would contaminate (I agree).
This is a combination of ground grains, vermiculite & h/poo, in a container w/gas exchange filter (micropore tape). The lids - once secured are air tight.
Vermiculite doesn't carry contaminates, by its very nature & how it is made (under extreme heat). Well weathered H/poo is not prone to contamination (as microbial content is dead) & there have been more than a few grows on it - totally unpasteurized. Grinding grains removes the insulation from & around any endospores they carry.
Once the mix is hydrated, them microwaved... that heats the vermiculite to extremely hot temperatures (at least in a 1200 watt microwave), it also turns moisture to steam. That combination in a container, while it doesn't create measurable pressure, it maintains an extremely hot temperature, for quite some time. That in combination with microwave radiation, hot steam & high content temperatures kills endospores in the ground grains.
Once microwaved & the container top is snapped or screwed on tight, it has a near sterile content. More-so than than a pasteurized substrate.
The container holds moisture, the filter allows for gas exchange. Just like a WBS jar that has been sterilized.
EDIT to add: Vermiculite Sintering temperature: 1150-1250?C & 2100-2280?F

I have heard others saying that you can just steam PF jars made with rye or wheat flour. Some others say they need to be PC'd. I thought my commercial wheat flour could be nuked easily since I would have thought the grinding and bleaching would have killed many nasties. Then like you mention it has no casing or insulation layer. But my nuked flour did contam, and was nuked for a good 60mins with excess water to make sure it was well soaked.
Verm will get to extremely high temps if it dries out. If there is steam in there is should not go much past 100C. I have done a lot of microwave experiments and have melted PP5 containers, which I think are not rated much past 120C before melting. If the verm got past 100C it should be "cooled" down by the steam which is not going to be much higher than 100C with the minimal pressure build up.
I have used a digital probe thermometer to measure temps before, I have heated grains to 150C in a microwave, they were bone dry to get to this temperature. Have you tested any temps of the verm jars? I will try it out myself. I am not doubting that you have had success, but have you actually done a verm/poo/WBS flour mix that you started from multispore?
