Observation, hypothesis and Q? on leeching (pic)

Okay, so dude tries some new dung. 'Composted Cow Manure' in 40 Lb bags.

He places it into the pillowcase, puts this in his All American, ties a knot in the top of the pillowcase, fills A.A. with water and breaks up the dung(underwater) through the pillowcase with his hands. Pasteurises this at 162-166 for 90 mins or so. Drains the water(actually saves it for his plants) and lets the pillowcase full of dung hang overnight. When he checks it, everything appears good, so he innocs with colonised B.S. Here is where the problem comes in, the mycelium recolonises the B.S. chunks, but doesn't aggressively(barely at all for that matter) overtake the dung. DAMN!!!

I also want to add that conditions for spawn run are optimal.

So I think about it:
Either:
1. The dung has no nutritional content for the mycelium to grow. (I doubt it)
2. There is something inside the dung which is inhibiting mycelial growth. (possibly)
3. The mycelium. (Naaa)
4. Conditions for spawn run. (No)

So dude figures he doesn't want all of this dung to go to waste, so he figures he will try leeching it, since the problem is probably #2.

He uses the same pasteurisation method as above, only first, he places the dung in the pillowcase, then fills it with water, gets his hands in there with the dung and breaks it up into the tiniest particles he can and throws out any rocks or stick particles, ties it and lets it drain.
Then he goes through pasteurisation, spawns the dung with B.S. Only this time within 2 days the mycelium has practically overrun the dung.

Conclusion:
I guess this manure needs to be leeched.

Question:
Why?? What does leeching do? What is washed away with the water after the dung is leeched?

Thanks for reading this far, can anyone help me out here. I mean, everything is going well now, but I just want to know the why's so i can know more about this whole process.

Here's a pic.


The tray on the right was spawned on 12/4
The tray on the left was spawned on 12/7!!

The only difference was that the manure on the left was leeched before pasteurisation...

Can anyone tell me why this is the case? what did the leeching do?

Anno? Una? Workman? BIO? Anyone??

Hi,

I don't know what you mean by B.S., but it doesn't matter ;)
Probably the dung has an unconvinient pH. By leeching you probably stabilized the pH due to washing some of the compounds out and/or diluting them. If the dung is composted you should check if it doesn't contain too much amonia (a base giving the mixture a pH over 7). Ammonia smells distinctive, like urine.

If the leeching helps, then you could use it, and everything is ok. If you should still have problems, you could mix in some calcium carbonate as a buffer.

thanks man, dude is going to get a Ph tester(he should have one for his 50/50's anyways). The odd thing is there is not an ammonia smell in the manure. But either way, Ph must be the problem, and leeching helped considerably.

Elektrolurch, you have been added to my list of very mycologically knowledgeable individuals... :)

BTW - I meant Bird Seed by B.S., looking back it does sound kind of funny..

Ok I think I know what the problem is. Did you buy the compost from the hardware or garden store? I made the same mistake. I bought a big 40lb of it for like 2 bucks and when I had finnished pasturizing it and letting it drain I tried to spawn it. The spawn didn't do shit. So I tested the ph and found it to be to base. I think this is what you have done too. I bought two kinds, chicken and steer manure. Both didn't work out, the chicken had no smell but still didnt colonize and the steer reaked very very strongly of ammonia. I think the reasons the myc. doesnt take hold is 1-it is too basic and 2-it has no real nutritional value anymore due to it being overcomposted. Thats my two cents.
