Student has bad trip on mushrooms October 27, 2005 - newsregister.com
SHERIDAN - An unidentified 16-year-old Sheridan High School junior was released Wednesday night from Willamette Valley Medical Center after undergoing several hours of treatment for mushroom poisoning, according to Yamhill County Sheriff's Lt. Ken Summers.
"He was brought to the office after eating lunch off campus," Superintendent Roy Williams said. "He was exhibiting seizure-like symptoms. Sheridan Fire District medics transported him to the hospital."
Summers said School Resource Officer Bruce Distler interviewed the student and his father at the hospital.
He said the boy admitted eating what he thought were psilocybin mushrooms, capable of providing a psychedelic high similar to that of LSD. The mushrooms had been discovered behind the rural Polk County home of an unidentified Sheridan High 17-year-old, he said.
"Bruce was not in the school when the student was brought to the office," Summers said. "He was transporting another Sheridan student to the Juvenile Detention Facility. He went right from there to the hospital."
Summers said investigators had found several different types of mushrooms growing behind the older student's home and ordered tests on them. He said one of them is highly poisonous, to the point of being potentially lethal.
"These mushrooms can destroy a liver," Summers said. "They can be fatal."
But the lieutenant said, "Fortunately, he did not eat enough to cause serious physical injury.
So far, no charges have been filed against anyone involved in the case, Summers said. He said Distler was going to interview more students today, hoping to determine, among other things, if the older student had supplied mushrooms to any other students.
Williams said no disciplinary action has yet been taken against any of the involved students. And he said there has been no discussion by the school board of closing the campus during the noon hour.
But he said drug use will not be tolerated in any form.
"We're in the fact-finding stage," Williams said. "We're trying to figure out what happened and who was involved. We're not going to tolerate substance abuse, on or off campus."
He said closing campus would be a last resort. "There are businesses in town that enjoy the business that is provided by students who do not eat on campus," he said.

Eating poisonous mushrooms is not a "bad trip" because it is not a "trip" at all, it's a poisoning. The media will stop at nothing to lie.
