White Amanita in Noth Florida?
    #4850575 - 10/25/05 02:17 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Sorry I dont have a pic or many details. I was at work (I work for a miniature golf course) and I was walking the courses and I saw what looked like 2 white Amanitas on the ground. They were in an area where it was mostly sand/dirt with a little grass and a little dead wood. It was at the bottom of a steep slope, kind of like in a ditch. It was white and got slightly brownish towards the top and had those specs on top like Amanitas have. I wish I had my camera that day, I'm gonna start keeping it in my car for now on in case I see them form again. Anyways, are any species of Amanitas known to grow in north Florida? I looked in the FAQ and it didn't say so I'm presuming what I saw was not an Amanita. Any input/suggestions??

Is that Maynard in your avatar?! lol, never seen that one before!

We need a better description to give you any kind of ID. If the mushroom has white gills, a [universal] veil, and a volva, then it is likely an Amanita.

I don't think it had a volva. :-(
I go back to work tomorrow, I'm sure I'll see them again somewhere.

But I'm planning on going hunting out in the woods later next month in a heavily wooded area. Lots of dead trees everywhere and thick woods. What should I expect to find if I go one early morning after a light rain? Is it possible to find the good Amanitas here in the woods of north Florida? What could I find that may be of interest to me?

yes Amanita muscaria var. muscaria grows in the North Florida, but does not grow in South Florida.

look from November to March in N. florida. it is ectomycorrhizal on a number of species of pines. it is only rarely found in mixed forests of oaks and pines, and seems to prefer well drained areas.

That is correct, but grisettes (veilless species of Amanita) are few in numbers compared to the number of species that do have veils, so it is relatively safe to say that Amanita is a veiled genre.
The large volva in almost all cases is a giveaway to the genus anyway, and many species of Amanita have short lived veils, so this factor isn't all important.

Now that I think about it, I do actually recall seeing them when my dad used to take me squirrel hunting early in the morning out in enconfina springs. This was like 6 years ago when I knew nothing of mushrooms other than you can trip off some that grow on cow shit and had never used any drugs before.
I remember seeing a world of mushrooms everywhere, it was so beautiful, it was hard to keep my attention on watching for squirrels. I remember seeing red capped mushrooms with dots. They looked fake and I wanted to take some home with me just cause they looked cool. LOL good times.
