verm pokes holes in aluminum
    #4850661 - 10/25/05 02:41 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I just dunked a few casings after the first flush dried them out too much. I use those cheap ass aluminum baking trays as containers. In some of them I had made a bottom casing layer (straight wet verm), in others I didn't. In those that had the bottom layer, the verm had apparently poked a few small holes at the bottom. I then checked those without a bottom layer, and they had even much smaller holes (almost invisible) at the upper casing layer level (upper layer also straight verm).

Had anyone ever noticed this? What kind of chemical process or reaction is involved here?

Obviously not, there were holes only in the trays with a bottom casing layer.
In those without a bottom layer, the rye grains left marks, but no holes. It's obviously the verm that eats away, or at least much more than the mycelium.

"then checked those without a bottom layer, and they had even much smaller holes "

So there are holes in both. It's the myc. Just much less then the ones without verm. Still got holes in the one with bottom verm layer because myc colonized the layer somewhat.

No, you misread me. Those tiny holes were at upper casing layer level, where there was verm.

There were no holes (only rye kernel marks) where the myc touched the aluminum flat out. There were holes only where the verm touched the aluminum. Just trust me on that... It's obviously the verm. I just wonder why...

It's mycelial piss that is very acidic. This is why a PH buffer and black plastic is the best  Don't bother with a bottom casing layer to soak it up unless it's H2O2'ed higromite(I sell it, improvement on Geolite), and even then it's iffy.

It's the myc piss. I tripped on it to when I first started and didn't like it much. Kind of how I ended up in plastic containers.
