I don't think it is all that deadly yet.

well it's not 100% mortality, but so far the mortality in humans has been 50%, that is considerable

The stuff that mutates into the human form has a 50% mortality rate, but most of it is just the bitd version.

But it isn't exactly common. It makes a great news story, but how common is it really?

according to macleans magazine, the spanish flu killed (depending on which historian you believe) 25 million, 50 million or 100 million. the next pandemic, be it from bird flu or otherwise, is estimated to kill 4 times that many people. so that could be 400 million people. people you know will die from this

employers are being given seminars to prepare for a period of 25% employee absenteesm. when you combine the actual massive number of deaths with the impact that will have on the economy, the stock market, international travel etc...

lets just say alot of things will be very very different.

may you live in interesting times.

yep.
there was the 1918 pandemic, and then one in 1957, then one in 1968. all avian flu.

the problem is that there hasnt been one recently, so most people dont have immunitity to even those old strains.

researchers expect this to hit either this winter or next. If cases start to pop up here in the states, i will leave univ, stock up on cans, and rarely leave my house.

Interesting times indeed, but this world could definetly lighten it's load a little. Mother natures way of saying "STOP RUTTING JUST FOR A FUCKING DAY!"
