A Thread For The Hippies
    #4851522 - 10/25/05 06:57 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

well, it looks like i'm one of you now.

i was quite stoned today riding in the car with my friend.  i usually have a metal album playing.  Opeth, Dark Tranquility, Nevermore... etc.  he decided to put in the Grateful Dead album with Box of Rain on it (i don't know what one that is, i'm new).  i realized how god damned happy hippies are.  just the lifestyle is so peaceful.

metal... even the songs that don't sound angry or full of bereavement truly are.

i was in a dark place with dark music.

i have seen the light!

:peace: :gd_icon: :heartpump:

I was listening to Grateful Dead earlier, but this thread makes me want to put on some Opeth.

I agree with GratefulJim that it's not all happy to say the least.  Box of Rain was written mostly about Phil's dad dieing.  I guess optimistic is a better word to describe their music.  Either way, good for you for seeing the light finally.  Now go explore their vast catalogue of music.  :sun: :gd_icon:

I've found Les Claypool stuff to be my happy music. It's not only jaw-droppingly amazing from a technical standpoint, it also happens to be really funny.

Granted, sad music makes me blissfully happy as well. Always good to be able to appericate both sides.

And I'm a hippy in many ways, deep down. I just shower more often.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Welcome to the fold, WeAreAllOne. I'm also a recent convert to Dead culture. Here's my all-time favorite show:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=12252

I was only two years old at the time, so I never got to see it in person... It begins with the first live performance of Terrapin Station, one of the best, in my opinion, and also contains two of the best versions of Franklin's Tower and Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain.

This one is a recent find of mine, not one of the most downloaded shows but one of the trippiest Terrapin Station -> Drums -> Space -> Dark Star -> The Wheel progressions you're likely to find. A perfect companion to tripping and further enhanced by nitrous (aren't all things?):

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=13776

Enjoy!

Ah, you were listening to "American Beauty", huh?  That's the perfect Dead starter album.  Get on the bus WAAO!!! :gd_icon:

Quote:

    Look out of any window
any morning, any evening, any day
    Maybe the sun is shining
    birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
this is all a dream we dreamed
    one afternoon long ago

    Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
    like the day before
    Maybe you'll find direction
    around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you -
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping?
    Well please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming too

    Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
    clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
    while going home --
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
    one afternoon long ago

    Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
    to another land
    Maybe you're tired and broken
    Your tongue is twisted
    with words half spoken
    and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A a box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through

Just a box of rain -
    wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
    Sun and shower -
    Wind and rain -
    in and out the window
like a moth before a flame

It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there

Glad you have seen the light Bro.  They are a wonderful band as are so many others.  They like all the rest have some not so happy music but still the point is to find a song and embrace it and relate to it.  This is what makes it so real for me.

Good vibes Bro

to each his own. though let me mention this. you dismiss some of the deads most beautiful slow songs because they are sad and give truckin a hell yes? truckin, prolly one of the bands most repetitive and overrated songs is the only track to get a hell yes? i'll let your judgments of the songs speak for themselves, i for one do no agree but have a grateful day anyway. for though we may disagree about what is the best dead we still both love the dead so we are each at least a little right.

I have to vote for Workingman's Dead. Yeah, some of there stuff isn't all that happy. Dark Star can get a little creepy.
