Low Humidity problems
    #4850065 - 10/25/05 12:22 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I've recently birthed my first set of cakes. I placed them in a perlite terrarium, with about 2 inches of perlite and 1/2 inch of water.  I read that most  people have  problems with too much humidity with this set up, but i can't seem to get enough. The RH levels top out at about  80% :argh:.  According to what I've researched, it should get up to about 98% in half an hour or so. Any ideas? :hypnotoad:

what make/model is your hygrometer? some are not good past 90%. Is there visible moisture drops on the side of the terranium.

There is some sort of test you can do with salt and water to see if it is accurate

It's Springfield brand. It cost like $5 at Lowe's. Hydrometer/thermometer combo, bought it yesterday. Gage goes up to 100%. Glass on top is covered with droplets as are the sides. Maybe just a crappy Gage?

eh, i dont know if you can really have too much humidityfor cakes. you can have too much hydration though.

it usually takes well over 30 minutes to acheive full humidity. it will take a few hours up to a day or 2 to reach its potential.

I've heard you need a decent one, not a cheap one. Digital I hear works nicely... Blackout said it right that some aren't good past 90%

I'm kinda low on funds right now. Think I saw a digital at wal-mart for 10 bucks, think that would work? (hell, if it doesn't, it's wal-mart, they'll take it back =P )

You should try the salt test on the hydrometer. Here is how it works. You take some regular table salt and spread it out over the bottom of a small dish. You want some decent surface area for the salt to cover. Now just add a few drops of water too the salt. Put your hydrometer in the dish on top of the salt and seal the dish up with whatever. Plastic wrap works good. Give it an hour to be sure. But it shouldent take that long.. If the gaudge is good it will read 75% rh. Probally is this only means your gaudge accuratly reads at 75% but its an indication of weather or not its a huge POS.

Save your money till you can get one like this,

There are a couple makes you can choose from. You want one with the rubber gasket. Keeps the moisture out. It'll cost between $25-$40.

Awesome, thanks guys (and girl =]). I'll try that salt test tonight after work. And try and get a nice digital. HippyChick - about your hygrometer, does one part go in the terrarium and the other part elsewhere?

One is the base reciever, the other is the remote sensor. Put it where you want it and monitor it up to 100 feet away. One base can monitor 3 remotes and the temp/humidity of where the base is. Hence, the 2 readings.

Did the salt test, and the gage read 45% :foreheadslap:, guess that's the problem, not my humidity levels. Thanks for the advice.  :handth:

this bitch is right dude (sorry, but your a badass, hence the "bitch), i wasted so much money on hygrometers. bought what i thought was a "top quality" one from Home Depot for like 10 bucks, neve went over 85%. even when i had condensation forming, showing really high humid, it still had me believing the perlite was weak. i then bought a "high quality" digital cigar humidor hygrometer, thinking that the high humidity in cigar humidors might last longer. 30 dollars gone in a week on that second one.. broke due to high moisture in FC. bought the one that hippie chick has, Taylor #1458 Wireless Base + Remote Sensor... the trick is to get an out door one because the outdoor ones factor in possibility of wetness due to rain. bought Taylor #1458 about 3-4 weeks ago, hasn't even flickered, even though its been sitting in my 98%RH FC for many weeks now  thx hippie chick

Also, (though it appears the problem was with the hygrometer) if you're using perlite remember that surface area is moisture. If the cake's on a lid that's covering an area of perlite closely, you're just minimizing your perlite layer's area. One thing that works beautifully is getting a styrofoam cup, cutting it in half and throwing away the top, cutting the circle out of the bottom so it's a narrowing tube, then cutting four squares out of the sides (so it becomes a jungle gym frame) and putting it fat side down and little side (the side you'd usually set the cup on which is now hollowed out) up - then putting your cakes on that. My english blows (big load) and you may have trouble with your cakes tipping off their pedestals (especially with added fruits' weight extending from the sides and top) but you can dig the things down into the perlite. Anyway, this is good to do because it allows the perlite under the cake to become useful - minimizing perlite surface area loss. Weird place to post this but it's a secret. So shhhhhh (and sorry for so many parens!)

or just put a wire screen over the perlite and set your cakes on that,

Yeah but a cup (could even be plastic harder than a solo party cup) is far more readily available around the house than wire screen. Although the screen is extremely superior... when you're in a pinch with this hobby, sometimes you do things that just work really well with what you can find lying around. You have to admit that the more into growing you are (especially stealth grows), the more MacGuyver you become.

Yup. But I'd have to go to Wally World to get the cups, Home Depot is next to Wally World, screen was only a couple bucks, lol. Same thing. I'd seen the screen idea while researching so I was ready. Same idea. The perlite has to have it's surface clear to work properly

Didn't I say "shhhhhh" cause it was a secret? Now the entire world knows... thanks. <3 j/k I think I've fallen madly in love with you over the months- and besides, the cup's what was lying around at the time and in making it and using it for extended periods, I realized it's superiority over a couple of other things like perlite sticking to the wet styrofoam (not to mention the shit that can be dripping off a styro frame beacuse styrofoam beads and holds water) and the fact that pins can form on the underside and around the edges of the cake that are not being held up by the circular single-wire frame that is the bottom of the cup, and sometimes you have largish caps down out the middle and trying to get out the side, filling the bottom frame or hanging down. With that multicontact, room-level plane of yours you're restricting some natural urges to grow in that area. Curlie ones that hang down are given the option when you put it on a hollow pedestal made of only 4 stems. Hell - make the thing out of metal for the perfect frame. Just saying it was my favorite way to seen shrooms grown cause it looked like it worked so well. x.
