ive been on the subject of mycology for a bit here. in nature thare is no pasteurization or steralization. in the good book aka the mushroom cultivator, it states in non composting substrates that they may be used in natural state, pasteurized or steralized. in my cultivation of plants and fungi i know that steralization opens what ever is steralized to contamination. it breaks a natural balance of molds and fungi spores fighting. so my question is could i spawn with steralized spawn to just soaked and ph adjusted straw. i know steralized soil mixes for cacti contaminate when cooked among other things, but i wanna know just about straw. straws said to have masses of actinomyces and can actualy burn down barns when wet from them. i honestly believe it will work, but has anyone tryed it?
thanks that one bastard you love to hate ninjaz

And, straw should never be sterilized. It will contaminate very fast if sterilized. Pasteurize straw and manure only. RR

word on that.
unless ur working in aseptic conditions, sterilisation of ANY bulk substrate such as straw / poopie is a bad idea. peace ohm

While it's not sterilization, I have boiled straw for 1+ hour on many occasions without any contamination as result.

That probably is considered sterilization, AFAIK there are no endospores in straw so it can be sterilized by a single boiling just like BRF cakes

Wrong.
Take the time to remove leaf and knuckels, and you will have better luck w/ straw.

Straw should not be boiled. My success rate with straw went up considerably when I reduced pasteurization temps from 170F(77C), down to 140F(60C) for one hour. It's important for the beneficial bacteria to survive, because they will help fight off molds like trichoderma. Relatively low temperatures kill mold spores, so 140F is plenty hot for pasteurization of straw. RR
