waste products or contam?
    #4842096 - 10/23/05 04:25 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

One of my jars has areas of brown looking stuff for lack of a better term

I tried to circle the areas. Is this just waste from the mycelium or something sinister? It almost looks like brownish mycelium. Sorry for the pic quality.

No idea really, its hard to tell from the picture. Has the mycelium receded from there or did it never colonize to begin with? How old is the jar? Did the brown form "on top of" of the mycelium?

If the mycelium receded from there or was taken over by the brown coloration then it is definitely some kind of contam. If it has yet to colonize then its probably fine. Heh, sorry I couldn't give you a definitive answer Mr. Shroom.

thank you for answering you helped quite a bit. The mycelium was spreding and just started making that brown color. It didn't overtake the pure white mycelium. The jar is 10 days old its been incubating at between 80-83 highest 85 so its been colonizing pretty quick. It was wierd how it started honestly lol As long as its not some wierd contam all my other jars are doin great though.

You should really drop that temp down to 75-78, incubating at 80-85 is a bit extreme and lends itself more to the growth of contams and retards colonization by mycelium. If it is indeed a contam and continues to spread at a lowered temp then you'll know its a contam. If you lower the temp a bit and isolate the affected jars then there is a chance that the healthy myc may yet take over. :mushroom2:

It looks like metabolyte. No problem. Lower the temperature however. There is growing evidence that metabolytes are not 'mushroom piss' at all, but rather a powerful enzyme the the mycelium produces to protect itself. Researchers are finding some powerful antibiotics and antimicrobial agents in the liquid.

It seems this could be a breakthrough if one developed a way to extract that and/or have a tek so this can be used in all cakes/lcs/casings etc.
