Why are they so expensive? I love the damn things but for $ 2.50 for 1 it gets a little unrealistic. Where could i get them cheap?
Also, how do you people test for ripness? I push them with my finger and if they push in and don't come out but still firm I figure they are good. Plus if they are dark green it is best, but you must be careful because after that they turn dark brownish green and that is when they are gross...

They're so expensive because California has to pay for all of it's crazy liberal programs and Florida keeps getting bashed with hurricanes. Also, the US government is making it real hard for Mexico(large producer) to import theirs.
You've got the idea on checking ripeness. I like to get ones that are a little less than ripe if I'm going to be using them a few days later. That way they don't get overripe. Also, there are different varieties, and some don't change color when ripening.

they are about the equivilant of US 40 cents each here right now. the only thing that pisses me off is that once you cut them open they don't stay nice and delicious for long.

Squeeze some lemon juice over the slices and store in the refrigerator. Should hold out for a day or three this way.

I agree. All at once, or don't waste it. But the juice helps if you absolutely need to do it.

If you leave the seed in, it will stay fresh longer. When I make guacamole, I mix it all up and put the seed back in. It stays fresh for 3-5 days that way. The seed produces enzymes or something that keeps the good stuff from rotting.

they are expensive to ship and prone to bruising.
they have a short season.
california liberal programs don't have as much to do with availability as does the growing season and logistical concerns.
quite frankly, the shit you guys are getting outside of california could barely be called an avocado.
they are picked way to early and lack the flavor.
Avocado tip!
if you want to help speed up the ripening process of your avocados, put them into a brown paper bag with a banana or an apple.

Lack the flavor? If I eat a good avocada its a good avocada no matter if I'm in Timbucktwo or good ole' Pennsylvania. I've had good avocados!

ohh maaan i lovem e a good avocado.
aside from super-chunky guacamole I like to grill them faced down sliced in half, then cube them up and throw them into tacos or carne asada fries (the carne asada being just regular grilled steak meat since i don't have the actual recipe yet).
There's this place in san diego i used to go to with geokills that served the biggest heaping portion of carne asada fries and the pile of minced steak meat always sat on a HUGE bed of fresh chunky guacamole.

They are less than $1 CDN where I am.
To test for ripeness I always buy unripe avocados and let them sit out until they get perfectly ripe. If you buy a ripe one you have to eat it immediately since they will go bad in a day.
Usually I'll stagger them, a few on the fridge and a few inside the fridge. The ones inside are for later in the week.
Hope that helps, may Jesus bless you.
