Hey all, been a while. So do any of you use autoclaves for sterilization as opposed to a PC... I have always used a PC but now got a $5000 tattoo shop autoclave for free and was wondering what you guys used personally for temp and time for both prepping a syringe and sterilizing Qt rye jars...
Thanks

PC does the same thing as an autoclave. All it takes is 15 psi & some time, depending on batch type & load amount. Brand name, model & chamber size - would be nice to know. Most Tat parlor autoclaves are not real large. Since most only sterilize Tat guns & needles.

autoclaves are designed specifically to sterilize things, so if it's big enough to fit jars into then you're likely to have some success with it. They serve the same function as a PC would but they are certainly more specialized and such. if I had an autoclave I would use it instead of a PC.

Most autoclaves are self contained electric heating ones also I THINK.....so you dont need a stove to get some jars rolling.....just a wall outlet. A nice benefit for husbands with the disapproving maritial counterpart or vise versa, or curious children. "jars cookin in the basement".

I use an old Marketforge Sterilmatic autoclave for sterilization. 120-121 C @ 15 psi. For jars of grain or any substrate jars I run them for 60+ minutes. Mostly everything else (spore water, lc, and syringes) get run for 30-40 minutes. A pressure cooker will do the same job as an autoclave it just doesn't have the bells and whistles that an autclave does.
best of luck

yEAH I GUESS i was asking if the fact that it goes up to 250 degrees or so do i have to add more water to a grain or wbs recipe thinking that more water will be lost? thanks for the times and what not guys... its great for sterilzing syringes too, and multiple qt jars fit :-)

I work in a Biology Lab and we Autoclave everything. I'm sure that a PC works fine, but I would use the autoclave over a PC everytime. I generally set it for 45 mins.

I have both. AA 941 (sterilizer)is portable. Big Bertha isn't, as its hard-wired into 220V.

Chamber is 36 long / 14 inchs wide. It will hold twice what an AA 941 will. But, the thing weighs a ton. I got it cheap on eBay. Then drove out of state to pick it up - in person. Shipping would have been multiples of what I paid for it. But, Iwas lucky - as the seller was only about 150 miles distant. So, it was a good road trip.
