What`s your favorite word?
#4837953 - 10/22/05 12:46 PM (18 years, 5 months ago) |
|
|
I was reading a post that was talking about cypress trees...I couldn't help but to think how much I like the word cypress.
I don't use the word daily... but every time I have seen this word, I stop and think of how much I like it. I think its the two sss-sounding syllables that appeal to me the most. It reminds me of a snake.
The question, anyone else have a word that they don't use daily but have always liked?

I think it's both. I like the word because it reminds me of when I was a kid, though now that I'm an adult, I appreciate the subject so much more.

I Got to say, (Instead of reposting this topic.) ...
This 'dude' got me! I actually have a favorite word...
It is the word, "word", cause it describes itself, in being itself, through itself... (As itself..)
Just as humans.. "tend to do" ...

The word Vomit has a rather special look to it, which makes it one of my favorite words in the English language, not for what it means but the look and sound of it.
My favorite word in German is ausgeprägt (pronounced, as in: to a high degree)
A word I like in Dutch (my native tongue) is kwinkslag ("hitting the kwink" which usually means a snappy oneliner joke)
I love language. I once surprised a good friend with an obscene phonecall in Japanese I filled him in later that that oddly excited gay Japanese guy was me, he had no clue wtf had happened to him as I called him on his office phone and made sure to mention his name amidst the oishii's and frightening groans. He later on committed the same shenanigans with a church friend of his so I may have started a fad among the mormon population

maelstrom
"A maelstrom is a powerful whirlpool; a large, swirling body of water. The word is a compound of the Dutch words malen (to grind) and stroom (stream). The original Maelstrom is the Moskstraumen, a powerful tidal current in the Lofoten Islands off the Norwegian coast."
...you don't see many "ae" words around.

I actually have a list of my 10 fav. words. Long story but was because of a book I read.
No perticular order:
Ichor an eheral fluid taking place of blood in the veins of the ancient Greek gods
Feint a mock blow or attack on or toward one part in order to distract attention from the true point of attack
Tachyon a hypothetical partical held to travel only faster than the speed of light
Yggdrasil a huge ash tree in Norse mythology that overspreads the world and binds earth, heaven, and hell togther
Twilight the light from the sky between full night and sunrise or sunset and full night produced by diffusion of sunlight through the atmosphere and dust
Wraith ghost, specter
Requim a musical composition in honor of the dead
Fantistic Based on fantasy; not real
Divine of, relating to, or proceding directly from God or a god
Aurora a Luminous phenomenon that appears in the upper atmosphere of a planet's magnetic polar region
honorable mentions Spoon Chalice Exile
Maelstrom
