verm texture and size

I am familiar with three grades of vermiculite, fine(powdery), medium, and coarse or industrial grade. I usually get the industrial grade in the big bags. I use this verm in my casing mix and been having poor results. I know that poor results can be caused by a variety of factors but I am trying to eliminate them one by one. Is coarse(large) verm not the ideal size for casings? If so what is the desirable verm size for casings. Please share your preferences and reasons for these prefs thanks in advance for any responses

In my experience, the coarse grade verm makes for the best casings, mixed 50/50 with peat, and PH adjusted. I've only ever known two grades though, so when I say coarse, I mean the largest stuff I can get my hands on. My fine verm projects never turned out great, I don't like the dust texture of that crap.

I have heard others speak of medium grade being the best for casings and that coarse has chunks that are too large too be effective. I dont know this too be true of course but hopefully someone might be able to clarify

Fine verm is all I can get where I live. Worked fine by itself as a casing:

I use the same sized verm as agar has in his pic. The brand that I use considers that medium grade. That works out great for me.
I usually like to use the smaller sized verm because I can get more verm per square inch, in casing layers or cakes. It also makes for a nicer textured surface for the mushrooms to grow on IMO.
Any sized verm will work, it will mainly be personal choice. You'll have to try different grades yourself and find out what works best for you.
