Psilocybe cubensis "Amazonian" on rye
    #478133 - 12/03/01 07:55 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

okay guys and gals,
here are some pictures of my cats only four casings.
they are amazonian on rye (inoculated via agar wedge) then cased with 1/2 inch of sterilized coir.
one tray was cased on 11/17
one was done 11/20
two were done on 11/24
casing time to colonization - 7/8 days
scratch/shock time to pin - 4/5 days
three of the four were cold shocked for 24 hours.
three of the four were deep scratched.

another shot, these two trays are lalbeled below. the one on the left is called "top right" and the one of the right is called "bottom right" in the description below (camera was tilted in the other shots).

This is them on 11/29,
The tank is kept warm and humid using a submersable fishtank heater. there is a fishtank pump that pumps in fresh air that runs through the water via bubbler stone. the little fan is suspended in the air, about one inch from the far wall. it moves the volume of the tank air around three times a minute, keeping the fresh air/stale humid air mix constant.

This is the bottom left casing on 12/2

This is this morning.
top left: cased 11/20, scratched 11/28, pinned 12/2 no cold shock
top right: cased 11/24, no scratch, cold shock 12/1
bottom left: cased 11/17, scratched/shocked 11/25, pinned 11/29
bottom right: cased 11/24, scratch/cold shock 12/1

That?s a sweet pin set you got there......

Also, i like your set up . One question tho..... arent you worried that that fan will get wet?

the fan is wet. the wires are set up so they are long enough to reach out and also make a drip loop (just in case, because Mr. H2O and Mr. Socket don?t play well together) and if the fan dies, i pulled it out of an old pentium, and from the power supply you can also yank one out (though those are a bit bigger) so the fan didnt cost me anything, and wont really cost me anything if it needs to be replaced.
peace, ar393

Ok I see, you are just using a fan to circulate the air, not actually refresh. When I was talking about using the fan (back in Advanced Forum), I meant to force air out of say flaps to let air out, but as soon as the air cuts off, they fall back into place sealing the terrarium.

Thats why I was questioning whether or not the bubbler could keep the humidity up, because I not talking about mixing the air, I?m talking about completely refreshing the atmosphere inside once every hour or so.

So all you do is have the fan circulate the air from the bubbler. You don?t fan at all? The pins are doing good?

I see what you mean. You would need quite a serious fan, and then you would also need to create the flaps to either open mechanically by lever, or by sheer force from the fan. Then of course you would need also an intake vent. (or if the fan was the intake, then you would need an exhaust vent)

Even if you were to refresh the atmosphere (say by large fan, whatever) i think every hour would be too much. then again i dont know the size of your grow space nor the amount of fruit you have.

i dont fan at all, my cat just has fresh air come in from the fishtank pump, and then its mixed withthe "stale" air, the top of the tank isnt sealed, so enough leaks/is forced out to keep the tank filled with enough fresh air in my opinion.

now if some one wants to give me some serious testing equipment, i would gladly hook it up to see percentage of gasses in the mix at all times. actually, you know i have a freind who works at a company that specializes in gas detection, im sure they have some sort of infrared or UV sensors. I shall need to speak to him about this. perhaps build a small circuit board and take input via serial connection to a laptop, then use excel to graph it, use a little least square analysis...excuse me, i think i need to change my pants.....i got way too ahead of myself there.

back to the subject, yeah the pins seem to be doing quite well. I will post pics later this week of what my cat has been up to. my cat is also doing the test to see the difference in pin sets and fruit production using same substrate, strain and casing layer, same environment, the casings go as listed above. I assume by the end of this weekend or the end of next week my cat can have some initial data to post, and then continue to do more tests to see if the results are statistically signifigant.

peace, ar393 and cat

Well hell yeah thats even easier then. Just keep us updated on the pins, and I think I may try your method.

My lid isn?t airtight either, and there is small holes under the handles. It?s a sterlite container, can fit maybe 2 big casings or four smaller ones.

well my cat is somewhat perplexed. the other casings are pinning as well as the first. the problem my cat sees is that there are tooooo many pins. I mean i have seen it myself and i would not be lying if i said there were perhaps close to 600 primordia/pins on the casing. its a 37.5 sq inch casing, and there are easy 20 pins/primordia per sq inch.

I will take pictures of the my cats casing (damn paws dont work cameras well) tomorrow night, and post them friday probably. I will also be taking more pictures this weekend.

who ever thought, too many pins...
peace, ar393 and cat

You are definitely gonna have tons of aborts. Maybe picking a bunch here and there to help keep the num of pins down so you get a good even flush? You know there is no way your gonna be able to support it all.

Post pics!!!!

Damn, after looking at your pic again, the one with the pins you can see a bunch of little white dots all over. I can see what you mean about the pins.

Cool!

Yes that is a good pinset, but a lot will probably abort. Also the pinset was probably not a product of the terarrium, but probably a product of the strain/cold shock/scratching.
If the pins continue to do better though, then we know the terarrium design can support growth. Can it support GOOD growth is the question.

ar393, you are like my lab rat! I hope you dont mind!:)

Also are you sure they havent already aborted? I was looking back on the post, and they don?t look too much bigger than what they did on your 11/29 pic. Thats like 8 or 9 days (can?t remember if there is 30 or 31 days in November). They should be getting damn close to being picked by now, if not already.
