How moist is TOO moist???
    #483364 - 12/07/01 06:04 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

I'm working with 3 different types of substrate:
1) Bfr and Verm.
2) Brown Rice and Verm.
3) Hawk Eye's BFR, Verm, Flax and Finch Seed

Each set of jars has a different amount of moisture ranging from dry to condensation on the jar...I have not innoculated or PCed yet...What level of moisture am I striving for???

How do you define dry? Do you mean you didn't use any water?

I followed each recipe as stated...the bird seed is like oatmeal...the BFR is dry and airy looking, but alittle damp to the touch and the Brown Rice is moist, but not soggy....

It all sounds good, except the birdseed.

Dude is currently using a Finch Seed/Verm substrate, roughly 80/20. He found that after steeping and draining the steeped seed in a strainer bag for about 10 min, the moisture was just right after adding his Verm... He was using the method of testing substrate moisture by grabbing a handfull and squeezing it hard and if it "almost drips" it should be good. Moist but not wet. Yes, almost all of these teks are written in subjective terms with vaugue langauge. Get used to it. What is obvious to the writer, may not be to you... The best thing to do is to whip up a few batches and see what works for you. It takes time but in the long run you'll be happier with your results... Good Luck!
