All the sperts here always say well that looks like, but that's not good enough for me. I want to be able to sight-ID shrooms in the field so I can haul ass because this shit is crazy! HWat technique does someone use who can do this? I read my book over and over but I found that my local strains look much different than in the pics. Peace out homie.

fuck your book. once u find them, give them a good lookover, notice every last characteristic about the strain growing in your area, it will help you identify them better. I have "runt" cyans over here that dont really look like cyans at first, but definately are
the only way ur gonna be able to spot them on site, is to find them a few times first.

it'll just happen, hunt for a few years and you'll naturally learn to ID on sight, even with variations in color and such

This is definitely true. After a few years of hunting, i have IDed 2 species of shrooms that i couldn't place to species, but i knew for sure they were Psilocybe (Psilocybe weilii and another mystery one that has yet to be IDed). Psilocybe mushrooms just have that psilocybe look. It's an aquired skill, but when you get it, you'll know.
Some things to look for: Psilocybe habitat is an obvious one... relative petite size- most Psilocybe species are small compared to other mushrooms. Brown cap- This may seem kinda stupid because there are many shrooms with brown caps, but almost all species of Psilocybe (and many Panaeolus) have brown caps, so this will atleast make them a possibility. Pearlscent Stem- Many Psilocin containing shrooms have a mother-of-pearl look to the stems. I've seen this in non-actives, but not to the level of Psilocybe shrooms. even so, this trait is still almost exclusively Psilocybe. Blue Bruising Psilo-scent- Expert hunters will all agree: Psilocin has a very distinct smell. Impossible to miss. It's very unique, so you'll have to experience it for yourself to know what i'm talking about.

I have the Pelliculosa down. I've seen a few cyans and azures around. My book is useless. You would die IDing shrooms from it. Peace.

I thirdly agree to that.
Since last year I got into shrooms and hunting them and such I grew greatly in the sense of being able to detect certain shrooms that I didn't know I could do till I looked or tried hunting for them again. Every distinctive detail of the strain is familiar with me even if it looks very different in it's characterstic. I know seeing a look-alike and suddenly a rush of assurance came over me and suddenly I knew they werent cyans and that they were some other mushroom (I dont even mneed to know wtf the other mushy has to look like I just know its not that strain). It's basically acquiring a new sense... 6th sense i'd guess.

yah thas true with me too. I started hunting cyans last year, and the cyans around here have full thick white stems, i saw what i was sure was a cyan, when i picked it i held it and got a vibe, so i looked it over before i put it with the others, sure enough, the stem wasnt white it was brown and hollow. Im guessing it was a deadly galerina, once i noticed that by instinct i knew i would be able to tell cyans. I still gotta get it down with libs though.
