It's been over two months since I inoculated my jar. I used the PF TEK and did everything right. I used whole wheat flour instead of BRF, which gave it a gray tint. This also caused it to grow slower then normal, but otherwise it was fine. I saw hints of mycelium just a couple days into it, and it flourished within 3 weeks. But then, it just stopped. The jar seems to be about 90% covered in mycelium, but it doesn't seem like it's grown at all in a month. Should I birth it? I can't see how waiting any longer would help at all. Any tips? I can put up pictures if it will help. Thanks.

Try using white rice flour, or mud for a substrate. You might be impressed with how well it works over your current substrate. Happy growing.

did you try flipping the jars?
is the bottom of the cakes the only part left to colonize?

There are a few spots left around the jar that isn't colonized. A couple spots in between inoculation points. The bottom isn't bad really. I may try flipping the jars. Also, I know whole wheat flour isn't a good substrate to use, but it's all I had at the time. I just want this jar to turn out well. It just seems like it just stopped growing all of a sudden.

I just don't know if I should try to force them to pin. Put them in the fridge for a little? Let light hit it indirectly? I just don't want it contaminated or it to not grow correctly if I birth it with a few spots not covered in mycelium.

if you have tape, alum foil or anything covering the inoculation holes...
remove it.
you can also slap the lid side down onto your hand...
dislodging the cake from the jar.
then leave it lid side down for a few days.

The only thing I have covering the top is two pieces of aluminum foil, the bottom later having the inoculation holes in it. The aluminum foil is very loosely on.

it's possible that all the moisture ran out in the jar? does it look really dry? This happened to my PF jars the first two times, but the third try I added a little more water than usual.

Come to think of it, the jar does look unnaturally dry. Is there any way I could add water/moisture to it? Do you think that might be the problem?

I'm not an expert but if you have an extra syringe around sterilize it suck some H2o2 up in it just in case and flame the needle and then inject some distilled water in it that way. If I'm wrong please correct me.

Yeah, basically make a sterile syringe 9ml full of boiled spring water. Then fill up that last ml with H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide). Shake it up good and use it right away. Make sure the water is at room temp before you add the H2O2 and also try not to add too much water.
Overall I would say this will not work. Probably you will either contaminate or drown the cake. Just my 2 cents.

Alright...I steralized a syringe and put boiling water in it and let it cool. I put about 6 cc of water in seperate inoculation holes, and then turned the jar upside down. We'll see if there is any progress in a few days.

Personally I quit doing PF cakes because birdseeds colonize much faster and are easier to prepare in my opinion. (although it takes two days)
