Well? Have you ever seen it do something strange? I havent used mine in a while (I know, I shouldve got the gauge checked). I dont recall these weird noises. Or do I? I know they do make strange noises...I think Im just terrified of these things.
What do you suppose the worst that could happen is? 15 psi isnt that much....is it?

My PC doesn't make any noises (well except the steam blowing out and the water boiling inside)
I was like WTF? the first time I PC'ed, I was expecting some really bad sounding noises..
But none at all lol
Guess I'm lucky with my Wal-Mart bought Mirro PC

......
Well now Im terrified. The only noise is the water boiling inside, and the steam coming from the rocker valve. I know it starts rocking at 15 psi, so Ill just put it on med/low when that happens.

I'm lucky to have a PC with two redundant safety valves. under the lid is a sealing ring shaped like an engineering ruler (the triangular ones). If the pressure exceeds a certain point the seal pops down into a lower part of the lid and the pressure shoots a bunch of steam sideways. It's still fucking dangerous as hell, and it scared the living shit out of me once too. There's some meat cooking in the PC and I walk through the kitchen and just as I start to walk by it it hisses and spits out a bunch of boiling water and steam and fills the kitchen with a cloud and a bunch of very small peices of meat, and pools of fat. I was so freaked out by that.
The second safety valve is some hole in the lid that will only open itself if the pressure gets to where there's a literal danger of explosion. I imagine being near that when it went off would leave a man with some 2nd degree burns.

Thats what the safety valve is for. However All American's are known for the lids to stick. Read a thread about a year ago were this guy thought heating it up would make it come off easier(didn't have safety screws on)blew the top into his vent hood.
If one did blow up it would most likely split or crack not send piece's fling everywhere.

Six killed in noodle shop pressure cooker blast March 21, 2005 - 1:59PM
A large pressure cooker used for making noodles exploded in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, killing six people and injuring 17 others.
The accident occurred inside a noodle shop near a busy market in the central city, said Kong Rith, a local district official.
He said the shop's owners - 52-year-old Chea Pheng and his wife 46-year-old Lim Kieng - and two of their employees died instantly in the early morning blast.
A chunk of the cooker's chimney, about 1m long, landed through the zinc roof of a nearby laundry shop.
The debris struck two people sleeping inside, killing them instantly, the official said.
Kong Rith said police suspected the pressure-release valve of the cooker may have failed, raising pressure inside until it burst.
The shop, which collapsed after the blast, employed about 40 people.
Those who survived appeared to be too shocked to recall what happened.
"The explosion was so powerful that it lifted me off my bed when I was asleep," said 78-year-old Hok Meng, who lives opposite the noodle shop.
"I thought it was the blast of an artillery shell."
if it were to happen it wouldnt be pretty..

dude your avatar is hypnotic.
I melted a pressure cooker before. High heat, no pressure weight, fell asleep. Woke up coughing, to a house full of burnt metal, rye, and stove top. Probably took some years off my life, but no big bang. Thread is somewhere on the shroomery.

Aluminum PC?
Aluminum is awful when you melt it. The fumes can kill you.
When I was on vacation in hawaii when I was 7 or 8 years old, my family left the condo we rented, but someone forgot that there was a tea kettle on the electric stove (were used to gas stoves, where you'd see flame if it was on) and it melted all over the coils. It was such a weird smell and I kept coughing for like 24 hours.
Thankfully the condo complex's owners were understanding and didn't mind having to have the stove cleaned up. They were actually somewhat apologetic about having an aluminum tea kettle.

yes it was a horrible smell, choking smoke, and luckily it happened at about 3:oo am, so no nosy neighbors were calling the fire department. YES I could have died, yes, it probably took many years off my life. It burnt a hole the size of my fist in the bottom of the cooker.
I am thankful to still be here, and I never cook that late in the night anymore. NO matter how big the jones is!!!
Also sucks having to replace the cooker.

LOL........
If it has a rocker type weight that sets on a little outlet - on the lid...............IT CANNOT EXPLODE. Since that releases pressure. To much pressure would simply whistle like a steam engine & flop the weight off.
But, if you run it DRY, it can warp, melt or crack the PC.

you mean the BOMB?
LoL.....years back.... I bought a huge autoclave, with a chamber about the size of a kitchen oven.
Wired it to 220V in the shop & had to re-pipe it. A few of the stainless steel fittings were missing.
Old agar thought 3/4 in copper pipe fittings would hold up.
WRONG ANSWER. Fired that puppy up on a test run to 30 PSI.
3/4 inch copper fitting BLEW of with a sound like a hand grenade, shrapnel flew everywhere & the sumbitch blew steam like a ruptured railroad locomotive.
A copper chunk whistled by me & left a hole in the shop wall, about the size of a nickle.
LESSON LEARNED........Don't scrimp on fittings.
Another time, with a AA 931, full of spawn bags, fell asleep on the couch, over-pressure plug BLEW out..... about 15 quarts of WBS gunk blew out of that puppy so hard......it impregnated into sheetrock kitchen ceiling. Had to re-sheetrock & repaint the kitchen.

Moe had a story about cooking out doors. i think he was using a propane turkey fryer or something lick that. Well, that blowup nearly cost him an ear, and his wife chewed the rest of it off But, seriously, inspect your PC for flaws (like i don't),follow manufacturer's instructions, (like i don't) and then, you will be safe..

A close friend of mine had a PC blow up on him. I don't know what model it was or anything...I just knew it was a piece of shit.
He was getting into the "hobby" and thought he got a great deal cuz he picked it up at a garage sale for $5.
After I looked at the thing, you could see that the seal had obvious cracks in it because the rubber was so old and worn out, and the steel ring that the lid clamped onto were pretty bent up, and the lid didn't really fit snugly on it.
I told him over and over again that the thing was a piece of shit and he is just looking at a time bomb. He is one of those really hard headed people that will not listen to anyone else's advice(has to see everything for himself).
Long story short, he bent back the steel ring for the lid with a hammer and decided it was ok to use.
he then decided to PC his jars with it.
a couple days later, I got a phone call from his GF telling me the thing blew up and he was in the hospital. I guess the lid blew off the thing and hit him in the head while he was standing near it.
A lot of water flew out of it as well.
He wound up spending a day in the hospital with a concussion, and 2nd degree burns on his face from the hot water.
needless to say, that was the 1st and last time he tried to cultivate. He now has a couple of scars on his face from where the burns were.
I don't want to make you guys scared of PCing, but just use common sense. If the pc you have looks visibly damaged, throw the thing out, or get the propper NEW replacement parts. Saving a few dollars is not worth risking your health.

Beware of pressure cookers! They are the explosive wrath of satan!
Have you heard of the bikini atoll? That wasn't a hydrogen bomb, that was a PRESSURE COOKER!!!
A rather careless Japanese man fell asleep while cooking with a pressure cooker one day decades ago, and I'm sure you've all seen what it did to hiroshima.
Sadly, he had just given the recipie for what he was cooking to a friend of his, of even lesser intellect, living in nagasaki. Same scene repeated.
Beware!!!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but is this true Agar? I have an old Mirro with the rocker top. I get nervous around it, b/c its kind of a hunk of old shit I got from eBay for cheap. It hasn't failed me yet, and I use it a lot.
But...what you're saying is that the rocker top would blow off before the thing would blow up, right?
Also, wouldn't a bad seal REDUCE the chances of an explosion?!?! In every other instance I can think of, bad seals = reduced pressure.
Has anyone ever had a rocker-top type PC blow up?
