i was wondering the same thing myself. although i didn't find it at a pet store, i found a place to order bulk barley straw online. well if you use it please post your results on here. this is the way i pasteurized my wheat straw on my last attempt, which was my first time using straw. i did it all in the bag it came in. i filled the bag with water up to the wheat straw, added a teaspoon full of dawn dishwashing detergent, sloshed it around thoroughly, drained and rinsed it until there was no more foaming, filled the bag with distilled water, let that sit overnight, drained it and spawned with grain. it colonized fine. the shrooms are really fucked up and weak but i don;t think that has anything to do with the pasteurization.

although you have to be careful not to tear the bag. maybe try double-bagging it? the straw poked a few holes in my bag that i had to patch up with lysol'ed tape.

Thats what I was wondering. That is probably why they were fucked up, the chemicals stayed on the straw and leeched into it. Try just boiling it next time, in a pillow case I think.

i figured it would just kill the bacteria and then i could rinse it off... possibly i didn't rinse it off good enough. but i had to do something other than just soak it. i didn't know you could boil it. i'll do that next time. what about pc'ing it?

no. pcing will sterilize it. you just want to pasturize it at about 150 or 160 degrees.
